Laser eye surgery? |
I'm joining the Marines, and I wear contacts. I was wondering if I can get laser eye surgery when I'm 18 and if it works that well. My uncle had it done and now can hardly see. Does it work? Just go and read at maloneyvision.com they will even refer you to a surgeon in your area. Just being 18 does not mean it is a given that it can be done. You have to have the right corneal thickness and also the right amount of Rx stability. You still might be too young to do it right away. Your Uncle might not see becuase of other factors as well that have nothing to do with the Lasik. I have helped co-manage several patients that have done very well. I don't think marines accept recruits post laser surgery. I think lasik or RK is the way to go check out what is acceptable by the Marines You can have lasik done at 18, it is better if you wait till 21 but even then you may have a higher chance of needing a "touch-up" later down the road depending on your prescription and stability of it. So when you are shopping for a lsik doc, make sure you ask about enhancment plans so you don't have to pay for it all over again. THe military used to only accept people who have had or allow them to have PRK. ( the no-flap lasik) but those rules have recently changed. Make sure you do lots of research on different docs and go with the one that you trust and you will of course be better off. Your uncle may not see good due to other factors, If you are a good candidate for lasik in the first place then I don't see where there would be a problem like that. You need to research the latest Navy and Marine policy on accepting new recruits post-laser eye surgery. I believe you can be disqualified unless you get a waiver first. And Lasik may still be unacceptable for pilots and divers. PRK is the best option otherwise. Laser eye surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and Lasik surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and Lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America. |
