Can you get throat/larynx cancer from singing? |
I am worried because i sing a lot and i try to stretch my vocal chords and sometimes put a lot of pressure on them. Now my throat feels sore and it's hard to swallow I am not a singer by a long distance and now can hardly even talk - all thanks to an illness called cancer. Almost everyone attributed my cancer ( of the larynx ) to smoking except for my treating oncologist who attributed it to "maximum voice abuse". My job was such that I was traveling almost twenty days of each month, talking on the cellular for hours at an end, I would carry two cellulars and two extra batteries as back up. Even on the days I was at home though less my cellular conversations would be for at least two batteries and even holidays were a misery for my family. no Singing wil not CAUSE cancer. Singing can cause irritation to the throat/vocal chords....cancer is unlikely unless you smoke cigarettes or pot. No, but you can damage your vocal cords by incorrect techniques of singing. Always best to get proper tuition. Singing is a predisposing factor for laryngeal cancer, along with smoking, alcohol and family history. Don`t worry. The throat cancer is caused for SMOKING during years, BUT NOT FOR SINGING. If you feel pain to swallow, you have a red angina in the throat and that one is very painful. I tell you, because I used to suffer it when I was a child. Perhaps, your tonsils will be inflamed. In order to be calmer, go your doctor and say him your problem. Yes, it is possible especially if you strain your voice to the point of hoarseness. Overuse of the voice may lead to nodules (callous-like growths) or polyps on your vocal cords. The nodules are usually benign, but over time could become cancerous. Better safe, than sorry. You should be seen by an otolaryngologist if you have a history of hoarseness. Acute laryngitis is characterised by the sudden inflammation of the larynx, caused by a viral infection such as the common cold. Over-using the voice - for example, yelling or singing - or irritation from cigarette smoke can also cause the larynx to redden and swell. |
