Can laryngitis lower your voice?

My voice just dropped drastically right after a violent bout of hacking coughs. My voice went from tenor/baritone-ish to bass. Is this normal? Am I about to lose my voice? I have a really bad cold and I think I might have laryngitis. I actually like my voice more this way, but I don't know what this might lead to.

Yes it can.. as I sing first and second soprano and when I get a bad case of laryngitis I sound like a baritone.

It is best when you do start to loose your voice is to gargle with warm salt water, pain relievers such as acetaminophen, the use of vaporizers to create moist air, and rest will help the illness resolve usually within a week.

Also your larynx (voice box) is inflamed so its best not to talk, as it puts so much strain on your vocal cords..my throat doc always tells me never to speak when I get laryngitis as it can damage my vocal cords and mess up my singing voice.

Yeah any throat infection can change your voice temporarily. This is due to the swelling of the infected throat tissues. Normaly when we talk air is exhaled through the vocal cord (in the larynx). T

he swelling of the larynx changes it shape and therefore a change in voice is noticed. Imagine you larynx is a finally tuned wind instrument and whenits infected it is slightly out of tune.
