Sudden lactose intolerance?

i'm 21, and recently have noticed that any sort of dairy causes my stomach to be really upset..i feel like i am going to be sick. no one in my family is lactose intolerance, so i have no one to ask what it feels like. can lactose intolerance suddenly appear in adults?

Hello, Janet, yes you can suddenly become Lactose intolerant, I have had this problem for 22 years now, after a while you become used to it, I try and think positively about it by thinking about the fact that lots of people choose not to eat milk, yogurt chocs etc, it will help maintain your weight, there are lots of good lactose free products available from some supermarkets and health shops. Be careful about what you eat because it is surprising where it crops up, crisps (chips if your American) pies, stock cubes, all sorts. Good luck, feel free to contact me if you have any further questions I can help with.
