Question re: young child with possible lactose intolerance?

Sorry to talk about poo on here, but ...

My 4 yr old daughter has tummy aches followed by very gassy BM's with diarrhea. Only other "symptom" is hyperactivity (more than she normally is). How long should I withhold milk to see if she is lactose intolerant. Could there be something else causing the gas etc? Note: no fever, no vomiting, not a gastro flu.

We have had her off milk for three days, and she still has gassy BM's, but they are becoming less loose.

If it is lactose intolerance, and she hasn't had milk, shouldn't the gassiness and tummy aches go away?

Alright. First off, to see if the symptoms are caused by a lactose intolerance, you need to wait for all the symptoms to leave. Then, you can reintroduce you child to milk based items to see if the symptoms return. It they do, then I would bet on a lactose intolerance. Another predictor for lactose intolerance is if she started to experience symptoms after about thirty minutes after eating anything that is dairy based.

Growing up I had the same thing. I took until I was about sixteen to mostly grow out of it. But, even now if I eat too much dairy I end up sick for sometimes days on end. If she has a build up of dairy if could take a while to get out of her system.

I wish you the best of luck. I've included a link that can explain a bit more about lactose intolerance and some tests used to diagnose it. I've personally never had a test, I just stay away from dairy.

I am no expert, but discovered after listening to a group of friends describing their symptoms of being lactose intolerant, I tried soy milk which helped and then discovered Dairy Care.

I would talk to her pediatrician before buying the Dairy Care, but all it is a probiotic that allows the person to consume dairy products with no problems. I really like I only need to take one tablet in the morning for 24 hour protection.
