Does this sound like lactose intolerance?

Milk gives me gas, so does ice cream so I don't eat/drink either often. Last night I had ice cream and woke up about 6 hours later with intense abdominal pain, cramping, sweating, then nausea. After about an hour and 2 iBprofen, I fell back asleep and now it is ok. When I say ok, I mean the cramps are gone but my abdomen still hurts a little. Can lactose intolerance appear that long after digesting dairy? The web says about 1 hour but I wondered if anyone has had it like I did, 6+ hours later. The cramps were almost as bad as labor pains and into my back too. Any knowledge for me here?

Yes it does sound like lactose intolerance. I'm lactose intolerant myself ( although I do OK with ice cream strangely enough )) and I get pretty bad stomach pain, which later turns into the runs. From what I understand, though, it's pretty rare that it gets as bad as your case.

Sorry my boyfriend is lactose intolerant and it hits him VERY VERY quickly if he digests dairy products, this doesn't sound like it.

yes for me too! as well as diarrhea. sometimes it takes awhile and other times its immediate. but cheese, butter, yogurt and cottage cheese its the opposite i get constipated.

YES! this is some signs of lactose intolerance. The main, most awful, and most uncomfortable symptom is DIARHEA!!!

There is an easy way to tell. No joking my doctor told me to do this, sadistic somethingruther. On a relatively empty stomach drink a large glass of whole milk, if within 6 hours you are in the bathroom with lava pouring out of you you are probably lactose intolerant. Never fear though there are enzymes in tablet form you can take to aid in digestion of dairy, like lactaid, many dairy products do not contain as much lactose, like many aged cheeses, and some cheeses and soured products actually have the digestive enzymes in them.
