LACTOSE intolerance differs w/ ice cream, soft serve, fro-yo. Why?

I am mildly lactose intolerant. I can generally eat a dish or cone of "real" ice cream with no problems at all. Or at the worst, I'll get a little bit of gas.

However, if I eat the same amount of "soft serve" ice cream, I usually get a LOT of gas! Oddly enough, I also get a lot of gas with frozen yogurt, which is VERY strange, since doesn't yogurt contain live cultures of friendly bacteria that AID in the digestion of lactose??

This leads me to think that soft serve ice cream and/or frozen yogurt contain significantly more lactose than ice cream does.

Does anyone know if that's true? (And also, has anyone else run into these problems?) Thanks! :)

P.S. I have no trouble eating cheese or other dairy products.

Frozen yogurt does not contain live active cultures as many people assume. The bacteria that eat the lactose sugar die off (well, they enter suspended animation - bacteria don't usually die due to cold) early in the process and the lactose sugar remains - which is why it often tastes sweeter than regular yogurt. Occasionally lactose is added.

Soft serve ice cream contains liquid milk in addition to the ice cream. It has "twice the milk" if you will, than regular ice cream.

Hard cheeses will not cause problems for those mildly lactose intolerant. Regular yogurt and sour cream are ok, too. Liquid milk contains the most lactose sugar.

Also be aware that the additives of different brands can vary, affecting the sugar balances.

Because ice cream is mostly cream, which is mostly fat. Soft serve ice cream is mostly milk, not cream, and it's the watery milky, non fat part of milk that contains the lactose.

So yes, soft serve etc. contains more lactose because of the part of cowmilk it's made from. Places like DQ add lactose to the ice cream to make it taste sweeter, too. That doesn't help.

Yogurts' okay because the bacteria eat it all up! Then there's no more lactose.

Yup, I get the exact same thing happening to me.

The amt of lactose is dependent on the amount of milk fat. The lactic acid increases as the cheeses ages too, as in BLUE Cheeses. Can you handle that type or only like part skim mozarella cheeses. I think it also is affected by some preservartives too.

Hello. I am lactose intolerant too. Imagine your stomach a iced tea glass that you are filling up with ice cream. Like in ice cream there are more ingrediants than just milk, in iced tea you have the ice, the tea, the sugar. If the tea is what you are allergic to, then dont put as much tea in. Thats whats happening with your stomach. Different types of ice cream has different ingrediants. The milk is more hevily put in soft serve to make it soft. Yogurt is just about the worst thing that you can put into your stomaach after milk. Its almost pure milk.

You probaly dont have an issue with cheese and other dairy products bc of that iced tea affect. Say you eat your cheese on a turkey sandwich. The turkey, lettuce, bread, mayo, all cancel out the cheese since there is very little of it.

I hoped that I helped. Another thing that might help is near the Tums in the drugstore will be a Lactaid milk digesting supplement. It take this as soon as I eat ice cream and my problems are gone. But, the no names of this work just as good, but sometimes you need to take more of the no names for the same affect.

I used to get the same problem with any ice cream or yoghurt, but have been diagnosed with coeliac disease. Have you had tests done? Try checking the ingrediants because there must be a reason why this is happening
