I am worried about my glucose tolerance test tomorrow. Any info? |
The hypoglycemia symptoms I have been having are so bad that I hate the thought of this glucose tolearnce test inducing those symptoms. Have any of you had the test or work in a lab and administer the test? Is there a chance I could pass out or even go into shock if the test makes my blood sugar go low enough? This is my main worry. Also, the test is not being done in a hospital or doctor's office, but in a free-standing laboratory. As a registered professional nurse who is also diabetic, I can tell you: relax. The test will NOT cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously. The location of the lab is not a cause for concern: free standing labs must pass the same certification procedures as do hospital labs. dear human Depending on how long of a GTT(Glucose Tolerance Test) depends on how much glucola you drink. It can range from 50grams all the way up to around 200grams but as long as I've worked in a lab I've never gave anyone 200grams of glucola. Be aware that these drinks usually don't taste the best. They are pure sugar. You must be fasting nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before. The phlebotomist will draw a fasting blood sugar on you and check your blood sugar before giving you the glucola to make sure your sugar levels are at the right range (not to high for the glucola) Some facilities will also make you give them a urine specimen through out the GTT. You will constantly be monitored though out your GTT. A GTT is usually checking for high blood sugar levels but in some cases low blood sugar(as it seems in your case) If your pancreas over produces insulin than your sugar will drop during the testing. Not to worry everyone will be very professional and you will be in good hands. It seems that you might be a little worried about the lab being a free-standing laboratory. Again don't worry. I've never known anyone to go into shock from there sugar dropping from this test or even passing out. You will be just fine. If for some reason you start to feel ill you need to make someone in the lab aware immediately. |
