What should your LDL cholesterol be less than? mG/DL?

I got blood test done on 2-9-07. Total Cholesterol was 219. HDL was 35. LDL was 154. Triglyceride was 149. LDL / HDL Ratio is 4.4. I am 26 yrs old, Male, 6' 3'', 255 lbs. Non-smoker. You could say I have a high fat diet. I like to eat eggs and sausage in the morning, and cheeseburgers in the afternoon. I get plenty of exercise though. I run/walk a mile on the treadmill before lifting weights at the gym 4-5 times a week. My doctor would not prescribe me statin drugs because of liver function tests coming back abnormal. So I take an aspirin at night.

Your total cholesterol should be less than 200. HDL should be greater than 40, LDL less than 150, and triglycerides should be less than 160. 81 mg Aspirin is great, but YOUR DIET IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS!!!! You should reduce your fats: saturated fat intake should be no more that 7% of your diet. Also reduce trans fats. Cheeseburgers are LOADED with fats, so is sausage. Try turkey burgers and turkey sausage. You should eat at least 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. Eat good grains for breakfast (Cheerios are great). No matter how much exercise you are getting daily, you must combine it with a healthy diet to receive positive results. If you continue eating all the foods high in fats, carbs, and cholesterol, you can end up with clogged arteries and die of a heart attack, which I am sure your health care provider has informed you of.

PS. Raswell R is full of crap. I don't know where he is getting his information from, but it is a load of bull!!! I am a registered nurse and have been taught all the dangers of cholesterol and how is leads to atherosclerosis. Cholesterol leads to plaque build up in your arteries. I don't know what this guy is trying to do, but his information is FALSE!!!

Normal HDL should be less than 40mg/dl and Normal LDL should be less than 130mg/dl. Total cholesterol less than 200. It is really important for you to increase your fiber intake. Fiber binds to cholesterol helping eliminate it from the body. Fiber is found in vegetables and grains. You should also try to cut back on the fat because it increases your chances for heart problems. Even eating 5g of trans fats increases your risk for Coronary Artery Disease by 25%.

Generally your LDL should be under 100 and total cholesterol under 200. Triglycerides are good, they should be under 150. Even if your liver function tests didn't come back abnormal doesn't sound like you're really at the medication therapy range. Sounds like you are in a diet and exercise range. Although you did say you receive plenty of exercise. You also may want to talk to your healthcare provider about fishoil. This is sometimes used as an alternative to statins and usually is most helpful in lowering tryglicerides. There are prescription meds with fishoil in them such as Omnacor and just plain over the counter fish oils. Hope this information helps.

the ratio of HDL-C:LDL-C is more important than total cholesterol values or the value of LDL-C.

average ratio is about 4.5. where optimum would be 2-3 but definetly less than 4

If you're going to take aspirin daily, take an 81 mg. tablet as they are easier on the stomach. Also, there are non statin drugs available to treat high cholesterol.

The desirable LDL level is considered to be less than 100 mg/dL Ratio is best around 4:1. Total cholesterol should be <200. So your figures are on the high side. Also triglycerides are just on the border. Should be <150.
