Does reducing your LDL cholesterol actually reduce the amount of fibrous plaque in your arteries?

Although people are always going on about good/bad cholesterol and the ability to affect blood cholesterol levels, does the reduction of LDL intake actually help to remove, or allow an opportunity for removing already formed fibrous plaques etc which are blocking arteries, or are you stuck with these regardless and must simply limit the damage that has already been done?

I think its mainly a case of damage limitation;

The latest thinking is that ,at optimum dosage, the drug statin ,not only reduces the blood cholesterol &ldl, but it may be the first drug to be able to decrease the sizes of the cholesterol plaques .

This is apparently more likely among the younger age group where the plaques are less fibrosed or calcified.

Extensive researches are being done along this line.

Until we get the definitive conclusions one should remember that "prevention is better than cure".

I routinely put my patients with Ischaemic Heart Disease on Atorvastatin 40 mgs daily and titrate according to side effects eg.muscle mass pain.

no just does not get worse
