What is LDL Cholesterol?

Is that bad for our body? How are we going to reduce it?

LDL cholesterol is the "bad" cholesterol -- it can clog our arteries, decreasing blood flow, and increasing our risk of stroke and heart attack.

The key ways to lower LDL cholesterol are to:

Lower saturated fat and red meat intake
increase fiber intake
increase HDL cholesterol (exercise).

LDL stands for low density lipoprotein. It carries cholesterol out of your liver and is considered the "bad cholesterol" because when it leaves your liver it likes to go to your arteries. To reduce it, try a low carbohydrate, low sugar diet. Also, Niacin has been shown to reduce your LDL while raising your HDL (the good cholesterol)

LDL stands for low density lipoprotein. It is the 'bad' cholesterol that can clog your arteries. A number less than 120 if this is considered desirable. Foods that increase this kind of cholesterol are red meats, fatty dairy products such as cheese and whole milk, and transfats. Sugars and refined starches may also play a role in this.

HDL high density lipoprotein is the good colesterol. It may actually remove fat deposits from your artery walls and take them to your liver for disposal. Olive oil and plenty of exercise will raise this cholesterol. A number above 40 is good.

Fiber, Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils lower your cholesterol. A diet high in fish and flaxseed as well as fiber will lower your cholesterol. You can also take cod liver oil and flaxseed oil gel caps that you can get at a health food store. Make sure you get at least a two tablespoon of olive oil per day so that your body manufactures the good cholesterol to replace the bad. Replace the refined starches with fiber and replace the sugar with something like Splenda. Do a web search on the South Beach Diet. There are some excellent recommendations there. Lastly make sure you exercise. Walking or swimming are good and fun choices. Pick an exercise that your enjoy. Correcting your cholesterol will require a lifestyle change.

Eat less animal fat.

Low Density Lipoprotein is NOT cholesterol at all.

It is cholesterol's CAR. One of TWO cars.

The other car being HDL lipoprotein

NEITHER IS GOOD OR BAD
