My cholesterol, LDL and HDL are normal but trigleceride is high. What it means and what to do to reduce it?

Mine were high, too. I'm not a drinker (alcohol), but if you are, that can raise your triglycerides. My doctor told me to cut back on the carbs (white bread, rice, pasta- all my weaknesses). Hope this helps.

TRIGLYCERIDES ARE FATS. CUT BACK ON ALL FATS AND EAT MORE POULTRY AND OILY FISH LIKE, SALMON OR MACKEREL, DON;T FORGET THE VEGGIES 5 A DAY ALSO GARLIC TABLETS HELP

In the human body, high levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream have been linked to atherosclerosis, and, by extension, the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, the negative impact of raised levels of triglycerides is lower than that of LDL:HDL ratios. The risk can be partly accounted for by a strong inverse relationship between triglyceride level and HDL-cholesterol level.

<150 <1.69 Normal range, low risk
150-199 1.70-2.25 Borderline high
200-499 2.25-5.63 High
>500 >5.65 Very high, high risk

Moderating the consumption of fats and carbohydrates and aerobic exercise are essential to reducing triglyceride levels. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flax seed oil, or other sources (on the order of 5 grams of omega-3 per day). Omega-6 fatty acids, one or several grams of niacin (mega-dose vitamin B-3) per day and some statins reduce triglyceride levels. Fibrates have been used in some cases as some fibrates can bring down TGs substantially. However they are not used in first line as they can have unpleasant or dangerous side effects. In one case due to an increase in mortality, clofibrate was withdrawn from the North American market. Alcohol abuse can cause elevated levels of triglycerides.

IN other words while your HDL and LDL is okay your still consuming to much fat, oil and carbs in your diet. Moderate those amounts and start working out if you don't already to help you body get back into balance.

Obesity, poorly controlled diabetes, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), kidney disease, and regularly eating more calories than you burn can cause high triglycerides. Certain medicines may also increase triglycerides. These include tamoxifen, steroids, beta-blockers, some diuretics, estrogen, and birth control pills. Drinking a lot of alcohol may also cause high triglycerides. You may be able to lower your triglycerides by eating fewer calories and increasing your activity. Reducing fats in your diet and not drinking alcohol may also help. If increasing your activity and watching calories do not work, you may also need medicine. Medicines called statins are commonly used to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol. But drugs called nicotinic acids and fibrates seem to work better for lowering triglycerides. If you have high triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, it may help you to take a combination of medicines, such as a statin and a fibrate.

My triglycerides were high when I got back from constant partying. Alcohol was the culprit. You never said anything about your diet. I know when someone couldn't figure why his level was high, but didn't factor in that he would eat about a jar of jelly a day.

I don't have enough points for the other answers but they also balance out the equation, but the reason for my contribution is to my surprise about alcohol. We were all told that alcohol can support heart health (if you don't damage other organs from abuse, etc).

Have you ever considered a food/drink log, and write down everything that you eat and drink? Bring it to someone who knows about nutrition or bring it to the doctor. Here are some guidelines on Triglycerides that I found straight forward:

http://www.pamf.org/Nutrition/triglyceri...

A normal triglyceride level for an adult male is 40-160mg/dl. Males aged 16-19 is 40-163. .TGs ( Triglycerides) are a form of fat that exists in the bloodstream. When TGs levels in the blood are in excess, they are deposited into fatty tissues. Causes: diet that is high in fatty foods ( fast foods), even drinking too much alcohol can increase the level. A high carbohydrate diet can cause an increase. High blood pressure too. You need to have a diet rich in vegetables and fruit, whole grains, high fiber foods, lean meats ( no Rib-eye, Prime Rib), poultry ( chicken or turkey but avoid eating the skin), fish at least twice a week, and fat-free or 1% fat diary products ( cheese in quite high in fat but, some cheeses are made with part-skim milk).
The leanest beef cuts usually includes sirloin, chuck, loin and round. Select lean or extra lean ground meats ( hamburger)
Lean pork cuts include tenderloin or loin chops
The leanest lamb cuts come from the leg, arm, and loin
Remove all visible fat from meats and poultry before cooking
Remove skin from poultry before eating
Grill, bake or broil meats and poultry
Fish can be fatty or lean but, it's still low in saturated fat
Salmon, trout, and herring may help lower your risk of heart disease
Prepare fish baked, broiled, grilled rather than breaded and fried
Limit cakes, cookies,pies,muffins etc.
Use liquid vegetable oil ( olive oil) and soft margarines in place of hard margarine, butter, or shortening
I apologize for such a lengthy answer but, it is important that you change your diet. Increase your physical active as this would be benefical as well. I hope that this helps. Ruth

Although it is less dangerous than hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia might result in heart attack and stroke through atherosclerosis - deposit of triglyceride on arterial walls. It usually is associated with too much carbohydrate in the diet, excessive alcohol intake, poorly controlled diabetes, obesity, and a sedentary life.
Therefore, you need to change your life style to keeping active life, low carb diet, and no alcohol.
