Congenital Kyphosis - HELP?

Do you suffer from (or do you know anyone who suffers from) Congenital Kyphosis? Is it painful? Did you have surgery? What other options did you find? My 1 year old son is facing surgery for this condition and we would like to avoid surgery if possible.

Congenital means from birth or inherited. Kyphosis means a curve of the spine causing a forward lean. This is most common in girls and usually manifests itself early in life.

Your son may be able to avoid surgery by wearing a brace. It is a long and difficult therapy regimen but can be effective sometimes if surgery is what you wish to avoid.

Surgery will be a must if his internal organs begin to compress and lose function as a result. Specifically the lungs can be jeopardized if the kyphosis (curvature) is too great.

Your best bet is to consult with a spine specialist (orthopedic usu. better trained in deformity/scoliosis) and seek their opinion.
