Total knee replacement at 24 yrs old?

m 24 and due to a motorcycle accident im getting my first total knee replacement of the left knee along with a mid foot bone fusion. im doing research and everything says that even 50 years old is young for a replacement, and im only 24 does this mean im gonna have about 5 more tkr after this one? the doc dosent think that they will last the estimated 10-15 years and it will last more like 4-7 if im lucky.due to my young age he says ill be harder on it weather i want to or not. Cheesy im a highly active 150ibs male who up till now usta work construction. i got t boned when a 16 year old girl blew a stop sign and t boned me at 60mph. i had 22 breaks in 9 diffrent bones below the waist, it still hurts just to write it down. doese anybody have any imput? grantyonke@yahoo.com

IM MISSING ABOUT A 2X2 INCH CHUNK OF THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FEMUR, there is a temp. plate holding my knee together. at first they wanted to do an allo graft(live bone transplant) ive been on the cudiver waiting list since nov. 06 but now they say that my knee has wore down to much to were im gonna need a whole knee replacement. this is a very complicated situation that im stuck in the middle of. and they are also saying that the allo graft is risky because of infection, and tissue rejection. either way there would be metal in there because the allo graft would need to be capt with some sort of partial replacement, but he thinks id soon need a complete replacement. its getting so bad that i might have to get the other knee done because i favor my weight on it. im a mess this is no normal thing, both of my legs were destroyed when the 16 yr old girl blew a stop sign on a busy road. i was doing 60 she was doing 40 and hit me knee first. i had 22 breaks on 9 different bones below the waist

You need to get a second and third opinion. My dad is in his 60's and although he has bone against bone in his one knee,. they won't do a knee replacement on him yet because they say he is still too young. For the same reason you stated,. If its lasts 10 to 15 years,. they are trying to wait because my dad is pretty active... and you don't want to do the operation again when he is 70 or 75. He had gone to three doctors about this,. and 2 out of 3 said to wait. So thats what he is doing now. That being said,. in reference to the fact that this was an accident injury,.. I will also tell you that a few years ago,.. My husband and 9 year old daughter were killed in a car accident. No speeding,,.My husband swearved for an animal going around a curve,. and crossed the yellow line hitting a MACK truck head on. My 14 year old son had no seat belt on.. went through the windshield and survived. (The seatbelt is what killed my daughter) My point is, what I was told after all my sons surgerys is that any major trauma like to the body will do damage to the point that when he is in his 20's,, he will feel like 40. It happens that quickly. He's over 18 now,. (and just bought a motorcycle that I am not thrilled about) and I can tell when the weather gets colder,. (We live near Pittsburgh PA,) He moves different.. he aches more,. and he hurts more. Even if he won't admit it. I see it. The thing with any kind of joint replacement is that it will never be like it was before.. (Its his hip and arm that have joint problems from sliding across the pavement..) so I would say try and get other opinons before you decide. You are young and have an active life ahead of you. If this is causing you to have a less quality of life, thats something to consider. If its just uncomfortable but you can live with it.. you need to consider that too. I wish you good luck in your decision and please be careful on that motorcycle!

You need to see another doctor. There is a new total knee replacement out now that reduces the need to get a new knee every 10 to 15 years. The old type that lots of doctors still use is two pieces. One for the Femur and one for the Tibia. There is an attached "meniscus" on one of the pieces. The problem with the old knee replacements is that the attached piece of plastic (meniscus) wears out and has to be replaced.
However, the news is good! The newest technology has the two pieces for the new knee joint and then a third piece that is the new meniscus. If that meniscus plastic wears out, they just go in and replace the piece of plastic and don't have to do another knee replacement.
Here's the website! Good Luck
