Does being overweight hinder knee replacement surgery? |
I am considered obese and am due to undergo knee replacement surgery soon. I've had a bad experience with anesthetic during a hip replacement in the past and I'm terrified something will go wrong this time. Of course it does. IT DEPENDS ON HOW OVERWEIGHT..CAN YOU FIND OUT WHAT THEY GAVE YOU? Absolutely. Being overweight is a hinderance in any surgery. In fact being overweight is just a hinderance. I've been there and done that and lost 5 stone. I had a cruciate knee repair while I was overweight and it took forever to recover. Best advice I can give you is to go on a diet. Doubly so, as you put a lot of strain on it relax, if you were at a great risk for the surgery then the surgeon wouldn't do it, the anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetists are highly trained to take care of all people regardless of size yes it does Yes. Since the knee is situated low on the body, it carries a large % of body weight (even more than the hip bears); obesityis hard on both natural and replacement knees. YOU are your own worst foe !!! I know, as I was obese, then got a wake up call.... get the weight off, make it life goal( |
