Does being overweight hinder knee replacement surgery?

I am considered obese and am due to undergo knee replacement surgery soon. I've had a bad experience with anesthetic during a hip replacement in the past and I'm terrified something will go wrong this time.

I am very surprised that you were not required to lose weight before they would set a date for knee surgery. Not only will you have a hard time with surgery (if the problem with the anesthesia is due to obesity, then you will have it again) it will hinder your recovery right after surgery, you will be much more susceptible to pneumonia and other infections and it will be very difficult for you to get up and around for physical therapy.

IT DEPENDS ON HOW OVERWEIGHT..CAN YOU FIND OUT WHAT THEY GAVE YOU?

Absolutely. Being overweight is a hinderance in any surgery. In fact being overweight is just a hinderance. I've been there and done that and lost 5 stone. I had a cruciate knee repair while I was overweight and it took forever to recover. Best advice I can give you is to go on a diet.

relax, if you were at a great risk for the surgery then the surgeon wouldn't do it, the anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetists are highly trained to take care of all people regardless of size

Yes. Since the knee is situated low on the body, it carries a large % of body weight (even more than the hip bears); obesityis hard on both natural and replacement knees.

As for your question about anesthetic, be sure that you tell your surgeon and anesthesiologist that you have had a bad reaction to the drug you were given so they can perhaps use a different drug for your next surgery..
