Have you had Knee surgery? "replacement -Recovery" need advice.?

My sister is having a total knee replacement, it was widely researched and it is the very best thing for her.
She is in her 50's. What do I need to be prepared for?
I am the primary care taker. I'm a sport professional massage therapist, yet "joint replacement" is NOT my forte'.
Have you had it? How long and what was recovery like.

I had both knees replaced when I was 44. I am 45 now and am very glad I had it done. Everyone recovers differently. It was a very slow recovery for me. I did my PT visits and exercises at home religiously. I also used a CPM machine per my doctor's orders from the beginning. It can be pretty painful at times, because you have to keep moving the knee and push it to its limits. Depending on the type of surgery, often the muscle and ligaments and stuff are all cut, so getting them to heal is the painful part. The knee itself doesn't have nerves, it's the tissue around it that is painful. My best advice is to be patient with her and remind her that it will all get better eventually. The good part is that if she is only having one knee done, then she will still have a "good" knee to rely on.
