Too young for knee replacement?

I have severe osteoarthritis in my knee - literally it's bone on bone - but my doctor says I'm too young to have a total knee replacement (Especially since I am so active - apparently the recovery/therapy time is a LONG time.)
He gave me a cortison injection - but that's only a temporary fix and am worried about being on that and also on Celebrex.
How young is too young? I'm 36 and very active.....the problem stemmed from having been overweight for so long. I had gastric bypass surgery 4 years ago and now have made the life change to the point that I TEACH group fitness. I don't want to lose what I've worked so hard for - but the idea of the pain returning is making me nuts!

Your thoughts please!

That's a rough problem to have. I'm 24 wih knee problems. I'm not sure how young is too young, but the choices seem pretty clear to you. Pain or surgery with rehab and pain. You just have to decide if the knee replacement is worth it to you. Think long term.
