Get doctors to go with a knee replacement?

My mothers been having problems with her knee for a long time. Shes been to the doctors numerous times but their not doing anything for her besides medicine. I know she needs a knee replacement is there anyway for her to be able to push this with the doctors to make it happen? I hate to see her keep suffering.

It is very hard to "push" to get a knee replacement unless the patient has followed all the recommended conservative measures first. Usual conservative measures include:

Anti-inflammatory medication
Cortisone injections
Next you can try the series of Three injections (various name brands like Synvisc, Hyalgan and others) which act to replace lost lubricant in the knee and provide relief for up to 18 months. These can be repeated as close together as every 6 to 8 months.
Arthroscopy to clean up the knee and the damaged cartilage inside.

Finally: Total knee replacement.

If she has insurance, they are very strict in getting this type of surgery pre certified. A great deal of documentation has to be provided by the doctor to justify the surgery. If all of these have not been tried, go ask her doctor about them and see where it leads. Good Luck.

get her to another orthopedist, if u get no results, then maybe she just needs more medicine and no replacement, get as many second opinions as you want and can, and good luck!

As hard as it is, what God gave us is best, most doctors refuse to do replacement surgery as the new knee simply wears out very quickly, for that reason, they don't do the procedure till the patient is so old they don't move around much and maximum life is assured for the implanted item

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. There are many factors that go into deciding if total knee replacement is the proper choice. Unfortunately I don't know the specifics - but I know they exist. Ask the doctor about why she's not meeting the criteria. Or even get a second opinion.
