High Risk Male Needing Knee Replacement Surgery? |
Risk Factors: COPD/Emphysema, Sleep Apnea, Atrial Fibrillation, Age 70 & Over Weight 50+ lbs. On Oxygen 24/7's, Bi-Pap Machine at night. Had previous back surgery (clean-up ruptured disk). Surgeon is suggesting Spinal w/Mild Sedation, Nerve Block in croin area. Would scare tissue in the lower back create problems for a Spinal? Be fore your surgeon operate on you they must obtain medical clearance. If they say ok.most likely is ok.total knee replacement is not consider big or danger operation. Some time can use local or lumber anesthesia. You worry about the general anesthesia use ventilator then depend how bad your copd is.Do you use oxygen daily? Even you are not in motion? For your sleep apnea are you use epap machine when you sleep? If all answer are yes.You are real in higher risk for this operation.Since you had back surgery before it could be challenge for spinal anesthesia, but depend the level and type of this back surgery.did you have spinal fusion?By the way you also patient of AF are you taking of coumadin. If yes it will add another risk factor, because you need to stop coumdine 3 days before the surgery and will increase the danger of blood clot to move to other part of body. Now denpend your doctors decision.Good luck. I've been an O.R. nurse for thirty two years....have done countless joint replacements....you could easily have a spinal anesthetic, be completely numb during the procedure, and not worry about general anesthetic....u need to have it taken care of...otherwise, you're going to be shopping for a 3 mph scooter. |
