Again, this is a waste for most people who undergo TKR as most are covered under Medicare or their insurance...you'd pay much less staying in the US and paying your co-pays and deductibles (not to mention saving the cost of airfare)...if you have no ins, however, go to India. What is the age of your mother? This is generally covered under Medicare. She would be required to pay her hospital deductible...which last time I checked was $712. After that, her hospitalization is a predetermined rate by medicare and she is not responsible for charges above and beyond what is standard for her condition. She will be responsible for separate anethesiology charges and other consultations, but generally Medicare and the supplement will pick it up. Therapy as an outpatient is covered at 80% under Medicare part B...but the rest is usually picked up by the supplement.

If she has another private insurance, her benefits may be different, but this is generally covered well.

The general consumer usually has to pay only a small amout of the actual charges.

If she had no insurance, no Medicare, no public aid, the ball park cost for hospitalization, surgical suite charges, anethesiology, surgical costs, prosthetic costs would be in the ballpark of $50,000...not including follow up doctor's visits and rehabilitation.

Some yahoo from forerunners usually chimes in, convincing you to go to India for the surgery because it's much less expensive...which is true...usually about 1/6 the cost, but this is NOT necessary for the average American resident due to insurance and Medicare (if you don't fall into that category, I would recommend it and the surgeons in India ARE excellent)
