I am scheduled to have a total knee replacement in oct..i am very scared because i am obese..and very out of shape since i have not been able to get around. I am scheduled to go to water therapy to try to build myself up a little before surgery. I have slowed down considerably every year and I am only 54. The doctor told me I had the arthritic knee of someone 70 or older. Please let me know if you have been thru this and what the outcome was. Since college, my dad had a bum knee. By the time he got to be 80, he was using a cane and very inactive and obese. He had basically worn away all the cartilege in his knee leaving no cushion. It was painful.
He lost his wife, my stepmother, to cancer and decided to get his life in order. He had his knee replaced and once again was able to get around and be more active. Since the event, he has often said that he wished he had done it sooner and that it was the best thing he had ever done for himself.
What was key for him was doing his physical therapy (PT) religiously. His PT started almost immediately after his surgery.
Now he is almost 90 and still lives alone, shops for his own groceries and exercises on his stationary bike, his ablounger and some free weights. He has dropped about 40 pounds and though he is still overweight by about 40 pounds, he is more active than most 90-somethings. It really is about the quality of life. You may find that yours will improve dramatically once you get through this.
Since you have some time before your surgery, you need to approach this event as though you are in training for an athletic event. Start watching the quality and balance of the foods you eat. Cut out the fast foods, fried foods and high sugar foods.
Get a good set of multivitamins and amp up the Vitamins E and C. Massage your knee regularly to increase the blood flow. This will not only increase the blood flow but also put you back in touch with the offending limb. Your knee has a lot to say and you should listen to it.
In general, be good to yourself. You will find that your recovery time will be shortened. When it comes time for the surgery, stop taking Vitamin E and any asprin. They increase the blood flow which is good but not right before your surgery. Resume taking them after the event.
Take heart. You will get through this and come out the other side and better shape. Picture what you want to be doing once your knee feels better. Make some modest plans and set some goals. Then resolve to do them as the markers of your successful recovery.
BTW - 54 is relatively young and your body if quite capable of recovering faster than you think. Good luck! My brother in law weighed close to six hundred pounds and they told him that before they would do the knee surgery that he would have to lose at least 300+ lbs. So he went and had a gastric bypass and after about a year to an year and half he lost the wieght. So they did the surgery and made him do water therapy too. He has done so much better since the knee surgery. I have had both knees replaced (November 2006, April 2007). I can easily get around and have very little of the former leg and hip pain I used to have. I am slowly losing weight. My doctor had told me that I had NO cartilage left in my knees. He is confident that my weight will continue to go down because I am able to walk and exercise without pain limiting my motion and endurance. I am 55. Hope this gives you a boost! Although i never had the procedure my sister and brother-in-law both have had it. They told me that while it is healing it is pretty painful but the end result was well worth the pain and discomfort. They have both since had the second knee replaced and are glad they did it. By the way both of them were overweight. 2- LOOSE WEIGHT GAIN SHAPE, FEEL ENERGETIC AT NO COST.
Without spending for costly Gym fees or steam baths For weight loss or bulging belly or sagging breasts, tired knees or laziness whole days. For all theses, I have one prescription of simple exercise of spot jogging to be done in four stages. Or 15 minute each. And that too for first 15 minutes to be done spot jogging. Second stage sits down with crossed legs keep your both hands on waist. Wide mouth, chin touching pit of collar bone at mid of chest. Sway you upper part from left to right, bending up to left knee and keeping in this situation move head to right knee and straighten the upper body. Do this for 15 minutes.
Third part is to be lying down on floor keep eyes wide open, starring at ceiling imagine stadium size clock and your eyes are moving on periphery. Roll your eyes fast on periphery in circle.

3- Knee Replacement - I have seen in India, ex Prime Minister Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had unergone knee replacemnt surgery , and still he walks even slower than he was walking...
As I understand the knee cap gets friction and sore due to acidic formation and loss of some fluid that keeps your knee in motion without pain.

His book informs us how our food and medicnies are just THURST upon us.. How food is mistreated in factories AND how humans are coned with multi vitamin supplements...
