Anyone ever get the lapband?

I am in a catch 22 that I have arthritis in my knee so it makes it difficult to workout and the additional weight is making it worse but I am 41 yrs old and had 2 kids plus had eating disorders for at least 15 yrs so my system is totally screwed up. I need help in losing this weight. I am about 70 lbs over.

I quit smoking 7 yrs ago and that is when I started to gain the weight. I have thought of it but I would never go back.

I am currently in the process of going thought all the testing to either have the bypass or the lapband. I myself have had a kne problem and cannot exercise but the person who answered before is correct. They will only do the surgery if you have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or more. They will do the surgery if you have a BMI of 35 if you have severe health problems.

See if the hospital give a free education class. I went to the one my hospital offers. They can go into detail about what the lapband is and does.

It is not for everyone but the people I met are happy about it. Also talk to your doctor. Mine does not like the bypass surgery and will not approve me for that one(so if I chose it I need a different doctor) but he highly recomends the banding.
Get your facts and educate yourself and then you can see if you want it or not.

It is very unlikely that you will ever lose weight. Almost all the women I see everyday that are that old are always overweight, unless they are smokers, then they are dried up skeletons. Maybe you could start smoking.

The lap band is a great alternative to gastric bypass however, it isn't for everyone. It is in no way a "quick fix" either. You should meet with a doctor. They will make you go through plenty before the actual surgery. Generally, candidates have to lose 10 % of their body weight and go through counciling before most surgeons will operate.

Good Luck!

70 lbs over is a medical condition (in addition to the other health problems you have.) If I were you, I'd talk to a doctor and not trust "experts" here.

I'm kinda in a place like you, it's hard to lose because of not being able to exercise ( I had surgery) I have not personally had it but have been thinking about it, not sure if I want to eat, little tiny meals for the rest of my life.
But my friends mom had it done and she did great, she said from talking to different types of people the band is so much better as far as healing, adjustment, than the bypass.

I would say to try to stop eating bad carbs and try to do what excersie you can.

The whole lapband is for a person who is extermly obese and I think that you are just eating to feel a void. When you can get over the addiction to food you would do fine..

I am saying this because in my life food is last, a rape, misscarage of twins a year later, and a bad back. Have all caused me to no longer car for food.

I do eat and I am at my right weight, I am trying to show how stress effects all of us, but many turn to a quick fix!!!
