What are the effects of medical steroids on males? |
i have klinefelter syndrome and one of the treatments is steroids. i just want to know more information on this subject before i accept the treatment. I took very high dose prednisone for about 4 years. The worst side effect was he weight gain. I was ravenous, couldn't get enough to eat. After awhle I realized I had to start changing my eating habits or I would weigh 400#. The other thing that was bad was that at first I was hyper, difficulty sleeping, just felt like I had a overblown sense of everything going on around me. It was difficult to relax but that to changed with time. The dosages make a big difference, the higher doese cause more eating and hyper feeling. I will say this with 100% certainity, the prednisone took away the symptoms of the illness I was being treated for allowing me to have a normal life and actually ending up sending me into a remission. The out look for my illness was transplant or death and its been 7 years since I stopped steroids and no further problems. I think that outweighs the difference. depends on your age. for boys going through puberty it can be fatal and cause sterilization because of the hormonal fluctuation. For adult males because their bodies have stabilized the side effects are lessened greatly. In fact for adult males there is not one death on record. But I admit I don't know much about klinefelter syndrome. Do lots of research more than just answers, good luck You are referring to prednisone, hydrocortisone, etc.? You should ask your doctor. Meanwhile, search the web for the particular type of steroid you will be treated with. This way you will have general information, and this could lead to additional questions you may want to ask. |
