Can small kidney stones still cause pain?

I went to my dr with lower back pain the other day- what I thought was a UTI began to feel more like a kidney stone. I have had three and 90% of my extended family members have them. Last year I had kidney pain and my doctor referred me for a CT. They found more than 7 small kidney stones in my right (where I was having the pain) and at least three in my left. When I went to the urologist he told me everyone had small ones and dimissed it as not important.
This time I had an ultrasound. Again the doctor said there were many small ones in my right and several in my left. She felt it was a UTI leading to a kidney infection and when I told her that the anitbiotic she gave me hadn't worked, she just put me on another antibiotic. If these kidney stones are small and "don't mean anything" how come I have had the same pain that I have had when I have had large kidney stones? and if it's all in my head- how did I know there were kidney stones in my right kidney last year?

kidney stones even the small ones can attribute to pain. I believe that they have many treatments for that. The most effective and expensive way to get rid of the stones is to use sound to shatter the stones (forgot what procedure is called)

Kidney stones of any size can cause pain, it's just how each person reacts to them. You do have a legal right to a second opinion, and it sounds like you need one. She seems very dismissive of your pain issues. Antibiotics don't fix everything. Ask for a referral to a different urologist. Pain is certainly not all in your head just because they can't find the cause.

I had kidney stones twice and boy did they hurt.... I'm surprised that you haven't passed them if they are small... go to a different Doctor... there is something that can be done to help you. start drinking bottle water... kidney stones are caused by the minerals in the water.

Yes they can hurt. My urologist dismiss a 3mm stone as nothing. He;s not the one peeing blood all the time and in constant pain. If you are still having pain after a few months I would tell the doctor you want them removed. Mine are stuck in my ureters. I would rather get knocked out for about an hour so they can remove them then deal with all the pain I'm having. You have to be assertive with your health care. Don't take no for an answer.

The Antibiotic she is giving you is for the "possible" Urinary Tract Infection.

If you want a Second opinion, you certainly can get one.

Kidney Stones have sharp jagged Edges and every time they move they cause Pain, and it can be Very bad - even with a very small stone.

These usuallly are flat and are always jagged, and that tears into the area when they move, causing the pain.

Drink Cranberry juice, eat Lots of Celery, and get a second Opinion.

Seems as if you shouldn't be having so many, and a Very Good Specialist needs to check this out.

I wish you all of the Best !
