Ammonia smell kidney failure?

could the strong smell of ammonia indicate kidney failure?
anyone with any medical knowledge answer this at all
thank you

It could mean any number of things, if you have kidney problems you should have pain just above both of your hips on one or both sides (on your back side) it could be an infection of the bladder or kidney, ot could be your liver, you couldve eaten or drank something that caused it, also several medicines and herbs cause the ammonia smell in urine...another thing is dehydration if you havent been taking in enough fluids you will get very strong smelling urine, Hope this is helpful...God Bless you and definately see a doctor, a simple bladder infection can turn into a life threatening case of blood poisoning very easily....take care...

I have this EXACT same thing you are talking about. I smell ammonia at random times, all the time!!! Keep track of when it happens, what you ate, your bowel movements for the day, and how much you are drinking and if you are breathing shallow or deeply, etc. and take that "diary" to your doctor and talk about it. I went to the doctor and I didn't keep track of anything and I was more or less asking him why I was smelling ammonia randomly all the time, and he told me not to worry about it, and it didn't sound serious - but you never know. Taking care of yourself is important! Keeping a diary for a couple of days can help doctors discover a pattern and maybe a cause. Please, if there is something they discover with you, I'm begging you to let me know how it goes - they still don't know why I'm smelling it. Could be in our brain for all we know!!!
