I am going through this right now with a family member and it's tough. Prevention, prevention is the best thing but if the kidneys are damaged you can do everything that is in your power before it gets to End Stage Renal Disease. It takes usually about 5-7 years for the kidneys to become completely dysfunctional. The earlier you treat it the better.
P.S. If you are foreign you can translate this website to many languages.
I hope for the best and you can e-mail if you like.

Your ankles and feet will start holding water and then it will progress up your legs. You will itch all over as the poisons accumulate in your tissues and blood stream. You will feel very sick. Your urine output will be scant even if you are drinking normally. You could be more tired than usual and have shortness of breath due to fluid accumulation in your tissues and more so in your chest.

If you think you are in kidney failure, please see your doctor immediately as it is a medical emergency.

seriously, if you think you might have a risk of kidney failure you need to see a doctor asap instead of asking the people on yahoo answers. you can go to the doctors and they can test the function of your kidneys. to keep kidneys healthy, drink plenty of green tea, red tea, black tea, water, water w/lemon, fresh, brightly colored fruits, vegies, and berries. Go the health food store and purchase natural foods and remedies such as Marshmellow, Pau d' Arco, Red Clover, Dandelion, Tea Tree and add them to your diet. Follow the directions. Natural foods help keep the blood and organs cleaner. exercise will help too. try walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.

You would notice swelling in your legs and ankles. You may feel itchy all over, short of breath, tired. There are many symptoms. If this is a concern of yours I suggest you get to the doctor soon and have a work up done. A simple blood test can tell the basic function of you kidneys. Also while you wait you may want to watch your fluid intake and decrease the amount of foods high in potassium and phosphorus.
