Any hope for an alcoholic dying of kidney failure?

My girlfriend's uncle is dying of kidney failure due to excessive drinking. Her family has been led to believe that her uncle will die, even though they weren't given an option for a second opinion. He has been off of dialysis for one month and is in a lot of pain. My girlfriend wants me to convince her father and extended family to encourage her uncle to get back on dialysis and get a second opinion. The system has led them to believe that they have no options. Is it too late to get back on dalysis? Will it kill him if he gets back on it?

His age is 42 years old. He has stopped drinking about 5 months ago.

A complete answer to your question depends on many things. 1. Does he still Drink or use drugs?? 2. What actually caused his Renal Failure?, Diabetes, Renal Hypertension due to advanced Liver disease caused by Drinking, or some other cause?? 3. His AGE?? The answers to some of these questions would help to determine if he can have a kidney transplant.
Also, He should remain on Dialysis until he gets a second opinion. Dialysis may help him be more comfortable until he dies or gets a second opinion as there are so many variables. Also He MUST have a second opinion, even if he has to go to a County Hospital. At least ask this question to his family-- Would you go to the Doctor, and after the exam the Doc tells you you are going to die, just say "Oh OK...
I don't think so. A second opinion is a MUST when considering any advanced medical procedure that could have life altering or ENDING results. Without Dialysis, the Uncle WILL die an unpleasant death in the near future if nothing is done. Remember that due to many years of excessive drinking and his other major medical problems, the only option may be just to keep him comfortable and as pain free as possible during his remaining life. hes going to die, just let it go at that, they wont give him a new kidney if hes a drunk and dialysis is hopeless after so long, his veins collapse and all that, he is going to die and thats about all anyone can say.

Yes you can get kidney dialisis treatments. My Uncle had a kidney problem because of alcoholism. I truely hope that this helps you out. I'll keep you in my prayers.

It really depends on him.... if he is still drinking ... his will to live ...ect....

Ultimately we do have to "suffer" the consequences of the abuse we put our bodies through....

we have an awesome GOD! the best thing to do is to pray to him that uncle doesn't have to feel the pain of suffering much longer; he probably drank so much for so long to deny that he was in pain.

I hate to tell you that he will die, but he needs a kidney trasplant and, likely, a liver trasplant. He is an alcoholic. He is not high on the list for either organ. Giving him a double transplant woudl be waisting the organs because he will likely kill those organs the same way he killed his original equipment --- by drinking himself to death. He cn go back on Dialasis, but even that is a time saving technique and not a cure. Your girlfriend's uncle chose his life. Nobody forced him to drink, did they? Now he must pay for the consequences of his actions. It is not like this just came upon him. He spent years bringing this upon himself. The best thing you can do is comfort your girlfriend as best you can.

Death to alcoholism is UGLY.
There is no need for a second opinion,the outcome will be the same.
Putting him back on dialysis won't kill him but it won't help him either and IF it did,it will be short lived at best. When the organs are shot,they are shot and nothing can be done.
His kidneys aren't the only organs damaged. . .his liver is shot and NO organ donor list will allow an alcoholic to receive a transplant. Not to mention that at this point,his body isn't well enough to make it through a transplant surgery.
Maybe the Uncle has recognized this and has decided himself to get off of diaylsis and let nature take it's course. At this point I know he's got to be tired.
Your girlfriend is hanging onto false hope which is part of the grieving process.
The best you can do at this point is to console her and help prepare her for the enevitable outcome.
The Dr's will provide enough medication to keep him comfortable but at this point this is ALL that can be done.
Any alcoholic who refuses to quit drinking when they have the opportunity is faced with this dilemma and most of us think this will not happen to us,that we are smarter than to let this happen. . . this is what keeps us in denial and keeps us out there drinking.
The best EVERYONE can do for UNCLE is to spend time with him and remember the good times.
The fact that he has lasted a month after being taken off of diaylsis tells me that he is probably on the last leg of his journey and time is precious.
