Kidney disease and nicotine?

a friend of mine has a kidney disease and has been using 'Nicorete' chewing gum for the last few years. I have recently read that nicotine can have negative effects on the kidneys....i'd like to know exactly what effects these are.
Any one with any knowledge?
Thanks in advance

I had a right nephrectomy 10 yrs ago. I was told by the consultant who operated that smoking was a factor. When I intimated that I might have grounds for a claim against the tobacco company in question, the medical people clammed up. Smoking is blamed for all manner of diseases, although some of the claims are far fetched. The good news is, that treated in time, your friend will make a complete recovery. He will have to undergo scans every 3/6 months tapering out to once a year. I am sorry I cant offer any comment on the Nicorette gum he is taking.

Nicotine is known to cause narrowing of the blood vessels and so affects every organ in the human body. All need the blood supply to work properly so any lack means the organs have to work harder which leads to them breaking down.
Nicotine gum is supposed to be used for about 3 months, anyone using it longer or in large amounts has as many risks as those who use tobacco. They may escape the clogging of the lungs and the infamous 'smokers cough' but they will be in danger of Cancer of the mouth, eosophagus and stomach! All higher in people who chew tobacco rather than smoke it. Advise him to quit ASAP

I've been on dialysis, had a transplant, had transplant failed and I'm on dialysis again. I used to smoke and have now given up - hurrah!! Cigarettes are bad whatever condition you have. The kidneys work to clear the impurities from the blood and so the more toxins you have from fags then the harder they have to work to clean them out. Also, it is common amongst people with kidney problems to have high blood pressure - the two things seem to go hand in hand. Smoking will not help high blood pressure at all - it's likely to make it worse.
If you are on dialysis or have particularly bad kidney function then you are at higher risk of a stroke or heart attacl - smoking only increases that risk. I'd advise your friend to stop - but I should think your friend knows that already.
Also, just a thought, I have lived with kidney problems since childhood and I resent any of my friends telling me what I should and shouldn't do regarding my health. I have to live with my problems and it's totally my responsiblity. It might be that your friend will feel the same way. Us sick people don't always like being told the bleedin' obvious - even if it's 100% right!
