I have my left kidney cancer. I heard that i may be removed the kidney and the adrenal. Why? I am scary?

I have a tumor in my left kidney. The diameter is 4.6cm. It is stage T1b. I already had CATSCAN. I will have MRI, CHEST CT, and BONE SCAN. My doctor told me I will have surgery to remove the kidney and may be reomoved the adrenal gland too. I don't understand why the adrenal has to be cut if the cancer does not spread out. I would like to know what happens to my health if the adrenal gland is removed; how long the surgery last? When I will be recovery after the surgery? Does anyone have the same my sickness? Please help me. Thank you very much.

i think ur doc is justified in doing Radical Nephrectomy. While resecting the tumor , the part of normal tissue beyond the tumor is always taken because thsere is also spread at micro level.Removal of one kidney along with Adrenals will not influence much on your futur life. The surgery procedure is usuallly of one hr. Recoverey is also speedy. It is better to get operated earlier than before it invades adjacent organs and cause metastases.Consult ur Surgeon for further Questioning.

Another best answerer is POPKIN. When I read her answer, I can apply it in my case right away. I also reviewed most of her participated answers and realized that her knowledge is excellent. Thank you and good luck to you and your husband, too. Report It

You really need to ask your doctor these questions. I can tell you I have known several people who beat this type of cancer. You can live quite normally with 1 kidney. I wish you all the best!

the adreamal gland sits on the kidney, so if kidney is removed the adreanal must go withit. Kidney surgery is done all the time. many people live long and normal lives with just 1 kidney. Remeber this JESUS I TRUST IN YOU and your fears will be fewer.

Cancer anywhere is bad news and causes fear etc. The best thing you can do is follow what your Doc tells you, my prayers are with you!

Don't worry, you will be ok. I have a friend also have the same condition with you. At first, she was too worried and scared for this sickness. But, after the surgery, she is ok and healthy now. Most important thing is you must be brave to fight with this sickness.
I wish you all the best.

I had a tumor on the outside of my right kidney as well, i had it taken out in December 2005. You have every right to be scared to death. Cancer is scary! However there are alot of things they dont know about it yet. Do they know for sure that its cancerous? If so, what type? As far as surgery, are they doing it with a scope? or open incision? The adrenal gland is part of the kidney, if they take the kidney, they also have to take the adrenal gland! If they do the surgery with the scope and all goes well the surgery may only be about 2 hours, mine took 6 because of the location of the cancer, however, they didnt take my whole kidney! Your recovery will be pretty quick if they use the scope, a couple days in the hospital and a few in bed after. If its an open incision, it will be longer. Sounds like they caught it pretty early, so that is good! email me if you would like to talk dmckinner@yahoo.com. Good Luck, My prayers are with you!

Please help your body heal. It can and will as soon as you give it what it needs to accomplish the task.

Read the testimonials on my page and blog roll.

Read as much as you can about why the adrenal gland is removed as well as the kidney.
Look up support groups for your kind of cancer and you will be able to email with survivors and possibly get some get info.
Ask you Doctor to explain why he is choosing this route.
There are SO many people who have totally recovered from this type of cancer, so try not to be scared.

I will put you in my prayers for a FULL recovery and a wonderful long life ahead of you.
YOU CAN AND WILL BEAT THIS!!!!! Put it in God's hands!

My husband had a large tumor on his left kidney. It tripled in size in 3 weeks. They removed it in a 3 hour surgery and he was in hospital for 6 days due to small complication. He was back at work in 8 weeks. The kidney MUST be removed because even if the tumor is benign it can turn malignant. You can live a full life with 1 kidney. You will need to be monitored by your doctor and lab tests performed on a regular basis. Your blood pressure must be monitored and be very careful about ALL medicine you take. If it is excreted through the kidney you will want an alternative medicine. You must take very good care as it will be the only kidney you have. My husband is 8 years cancer free now so be assured there is hope. Good luck.
