Dad has kidney cancer?

My father was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year in February. He only has one kidney so it is complicated, because we can't do a kidney transplant, cause then the new kidney may get infected.
He told me that the doctors said it could take up to 10 years to kill him. He has already been to hospital a few times because of really bad pain.
I can't ask the doctors how long he has because they won't tell me due to patient-doctor confidentiality.
A friend of my dad's who is also my friend says that he reckons that my dad only has up to two years left.
But I'm worried that he could have his own reasons for saying that to keep me in New Zealand. (he says he's in love with me -but I want to travel which keeps us from being together. But if my dad is seriously ill then I'll stay in nz. . . . )
So he might only be saying that so that I stay in nz and then he can try to win me over. . . .
My relationship with my dad isn't the best because he left me and my mum when i was 6 (im now 18).

Here's a saying of which I really like but don't know from where it came. "If you love something very, very much, let it go free. If it does not come back, it it was never meant to be yours; but if it does, love it forever. " If, indeed, your friend loves you, he will let you go. As for your father, I can only say my father died when I was 7. I feel as though I've missed so much. (My mother never remarried.) Grasp what you can while your father is still alive and forgive him. Who knows? if you two can enjoy each other maybe he'll be around longer than expected. At least try to uplift his spirits--maybe you could even travel somewhere together. You know the old saying--You can't do something if you don't try. Best wishes to you and your dad.

If your dad happens to pass away, you will never be able to forgive yourself. He might have made some mistakes in the past but you need to be the bigger person. He needs you right now and if you leave now, someday you might look back and wish you would have been with him while you had the chance.

My father has Kidney cancer.

To know his prognosis it is important to know the type (there are several types of kidney cancer) of kidney cancer and the stage. Kidney cancer that is stage 3 or 4 has a 8-12 month survival on average (numbers from 3 years ago). New treatments have been developped recently but they are NOT cures and only extend life.

If he has a lower stage of kidney cancer then he may live for many years.

You have to make your own decisions about how to deal with your father and his cancer but the numbers can be grim and the cancer can move very fast depending on the type. Best of luck.
