What causes keloids?

i've gotten my ears pierced like 2 months ago and i haven't done a good job of cleaning it...and today i noticed a very small keloid on one of the holes in my ear...is there a way to prevent it from getting bigger? And did the keloid appear because i haven't been cleaning my ears as often as i was told to clean them?

Cryosurgery (freezing with liquid nitrogen) shrinks some scars.
Acne scars are most amenable to this method.
Injecting corticosteroids flattens stiff scars ("keloids"), by softening them.
