Juvenile diabetes?

Does anyone have experience with juvenile diabetes? I'm a little worried about my one year old son. Type 1 diabetes runs in my husbands family, although most of his relatives were fine until they were in their 30s and 40s. I have noticed that my son acts desperately thirsty. When we give him a drink he finishes it quickly and cries until we give him more. He will drink until he is gagging. I just looked up the symptoms of juvenile diabetes and it mentioned labored breathing as well. Several people have mentioned to me that they thought it was strange that he is always out of breath. I just assumed it was because he is always running. Other than that he is a very healthy child. We just went to the doctor yesterday and she said that he looks fantastic. He is in the 97th percentile for height and very healthy 26lbs. He is very active and never sits down. Do I have reason to be concerned?

he just went for a well baby check. If you have kids you know it's like in the Dr.'s office with a screaming 1 year old who just got shots and a doctor who doesn't want to waste more than 5 minutes on you. I remembered to ask about the breathing (which she said not to worry about), but frankly I forgot about his drinking habits...

These were my daughter's exact symptoms. It progressed from there to fatigue and weight loss. I took her in because she was drinking so much. It took 1 minute to prick her finger and get a blood sample and a diagnosis. They then called an ambulance to take us to the hospital. They said that if I had waited one more day she would have gone into a life-threatening coma.

I have since learned that diabetes is more frequently passed through the father's side of the family. This was our case. Her grandfather had it, but not my husband, so we weren't that suspicious at first.

It's such a quick, easy test... Please, please do it.

Yes you have reaon to be worried. Why didn't you mention his excess thirst to the doc yesterday so she could run tests on him to find out if something is wrong. Call your doc and get him checked out just to be on the safe side. It probably won't be diabetes but something may be going on if he has excess thirst. This is not normal.

he may just be someone who is easily dehydrated. The breathing could be from him runnign around low on liquids or something similar to athsma that many children have.

My boyfriend was diagnosed with Diabetes when he was 3.. this doesn't sound at all like what he had.
There would be other symptoms for your son, nasuea, feeling ill after eating, weakness, lethargy ect.

Sounds like late onset runs in your husbands family and i wouldnt worry too much about it. Watch him if you see more signs ask for glucose checks.

If you are REALLY worried go to the store and buy a glucose meter, you can check your sons blood sugar lvls (the pharmacist can tell you whats normal) when hes woken up and after he eats, thats usually a really good isgn but those machines arnt cheap.

Good luck, i dont believe there is much if anything to worry about

if you are showing signs for the diebetes. then you need to go to the doctor again for that. if they dtill give you the same answer get a second opinion. casue there may be something actually wrong and your doctor is to "lazy" to check.

Well it could be normal but did you express your concern to your doctor? If so on call the office and ask what tests were run and if you didn't express your concerns and what you have written here. I think it's possible but maybe not probable.

It wouldn't hurt to have his blood sugar tested. They just need a little blood. The unquenchable thirst is a hallmark of diabetes.

You can get blood testing strips, monitor, lancets and alcohol swabs to test him at home and see what you get. (Of course a fasting blood glucose test at the doctor's office is best.)

hi. my husband is type 1 diabetic. my son recently became very ill. he stopped crawling and began to lose weight rapidly. he went from being in the 95th percentile to the 5th at 11 and 1/2 months. he began to sleep all the time and vomit after meals. we took a random blood sugar reading and it was 154. he is currently being paneled for type 1 or juvenile diabetes. because it is more likely to pass from the father and even then only 10 percent more likely than others. my son is now one and only 19#. if you are worried, then call your pediatrician and ask them to do a diabetes panel. but beware, if you think getting shots is hard at that age, wait till you see them draw blood. i am telling you this out of experience, you need to DEMAND a pediatric phlebotomist take blood. they are more experienced in children that age. the first time they had to take blood from my baby and it was just a lab tech, it took two grown men to hold him down and he was all bruised up afterwards. good luck to you.
