Some symptoms of juvenile diabetes? |
I have a nursing background(several years ago) so sometimes I tend to obsess about my children but all of a sudden my 4 year old is thirsty all the time and seems to be urinating alot. Of course it is summertime and he's active so he will be drinking more and the result of that would be urinating more. What else should I be looking for and should I just go have him screened or should I monitor him for awhile longer. Does he awaken in the night and have to have water? Is he a restless sleeper? Is he grouchy and I mean unusually grouchy? Does he get sleepy after meals? Especially if they are high carb meals? If any or all of these are yes, I would take him in. Chances are he is just fine but trust your mommy judgement. If you have noticed it, then you need to watch him. Don't just think you are over protective. Moms sense things or at least are the first to notice changes. Don't discount that funny feeling. But again, he is probably fine. Don't worry but act if you need to. Test his blood sugar but don't wait too long to see a doctor, it's dangerous. hm, perhaps you should look if the thrist appears after your child ate something with suger in it. Take him to see his pediatrician! Diabetes is nothing to take lightly. Look for weight loss even if we's not overweight and smell his breath, if it smells like rotten fruit, get him to a doctor...NOW! Has his weight changes significantly up or down? That can be another warning sign. If there's a history of diabetes type 1 in your family that could be another indicator. Irritability, exhaustion (ie if your son stopped napping when he was two, but suddenly wants to sleep), excessive hunger, weight loss are also symptoms. If he exhibits any of these, I would take him in to see his doctor. I hope that your son is just staying hydrated this summer, 'cause diabetes sucks! Symptoms of juvenile diabetes mirror the symptoms for the adult onset form, except the symptoms tend to be more severe ... as juvenile diabetes tends to be due to insufficient or lack of insulin response as opposed to poor metabolism of insulin. I would suggest that tiredness, constant hunger, thirstiness (to the extreme - more than normal), frequent urination, blurred vision and at times, even slurred speech. Symptoms may vary from patient to patient ... best to assess the situation on a day when the child is not as active, maybe when it is a rainy day and he/she stays indoors. Go to the Walmart pharmacy and buy an Accuchec for $22.00. You can test your children anytime and feel better and know either way. |
