My husband has juvenile diabetes and? |
sometimes when his blood glucose gets low, his mouth freezes up, he can't talk, his lips get all weird and hesays he feels weird....does this happen to anyone else? He's on an insulin pump, so I think he forgets all about it when he gets busy at work My husband has type I diabetes and I have seen him act very strange when his blood sugar gets low. Once his whole body went stiff in the middle of the night and another time he wouldn't drink the juice I was trying to give him because he thought I was trying to poison him (he told me this after the incident). I always keep snacks/juice on hand and a glucagon injection (in case he ever goes unconscious) I feel for him He needs to go to the doc and take his meds regularly Yes. his brain needs sugar, its almost its only source of energy. its his brain slowing down, malfunctioning when his sugar is low. Yes very much so. Often when sugar gets low the brain is still working fairly well but the mouth or body is hard to control. People are often mistaken for drunk. The next thing to happen as sugar continues to drop is that the brain does not have enough sugar to do even simple body tasks. At this point the patient can lose consciousness, go into convulsions and even die. It is very dangerous and he should keep a close check on his sugar levels. Test 4 times daily. Type 1 diabetes is a very serious thing. i have a nurse in the fam. she says that many times the people that are coming in to the er for diabetes are on the pump. it made it sound like the pump doesnt work that well. G'day I also have juv diabetes (diagnosed when I was 19). Have been using a pumps for approx 18mths. Majority of time I am hypo unaware (have dropped to as low as 1.7 before I thought better check my bsl) But at times when I am aware of low bsl's I get tingling in my lips, tongue feels as tho it sticks to the top of my mouth & I can also become extremely argumentative! I have even gone to walk outside totally starkers whilst having an extreme low (not to mention getting our children out of bed when they were wee things & telling my hubby that they had been crying when they were still totally sound asleep). I test myself before all meals or snacks 2 hours after main meals & first thing upon waking I feel like a damn pin cushion, & I still have extreme lows. My specialist & diabetes nurse/pump nurse have basically accepted the fact that I am extremely insulin sensitive & due to many other health issues (I have what is called Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndrome type 2, tho depending on what test's that they do it can sometimes be type 3, which means I have Diabetes, Graves Disease, Vitiligo, possible Chron's disease, Coeliacs, pernishus anemia & I also have osteoporosis) phew what a list lol. The brain uses glucose from the blood for fuel. When a person's blood glucose level drops too low, they can act drunk and even pass out completely. I've not heard of the mouth freeze thing, but that seems reasonable. hi Mrs.m, i guessing if your husbands insulin gets too low that is why his face freezes like that and he slurs his speech i would suggest you make an appointment along with him too see his doctor and tell him all this wierd stuff you've noticed happening to him and that you are concered for his health and well being if this helps please let me know. yes, he is having a hypoglycemic reation and his body is in shock. imo it would be helpful for him is to use a meter and test at regular intervals and when he feels either his blood glucose level is low or peculiar. His insulin will cause his glucose to drop and if he is unaware of when this is happening a tight schedule of testing is important. Good luck and G-d bless. Yes, it is completely normal, when your blood is low it is like you are drunk, there was a diabetic wrestler recently arrested for being drunk in public at the movies and then they found out he had low blood. Just make sure he tries to eat something/test his blood before he drives so he doesn't hurt anyone, including himself by getting pulled over and having them arrest him for being drunk when he could pass out. The next step if he was alone and didn't get food would be to pass out, happened twice that I woke up in an emergency room after low blood and didn't remember anything. |
