My husband has type 1 diabetes, juvenile onset? |
is my son more likely to have it as well? are there any signs i can watch for? he is 10 months old. i breastfed until he was 5 months old. however, when he was born, he was 10 lbs. and his sugar was actually low, so they gave him formula right away. (rather than sugar saline). any information you could give me would help. thanks a bunch! Your son may be pre-disposed but you just have to wait and see. Simply be aware of the symtoms and let him live normal life. As a parent you'll worry of course but there's nothing you can do to prevent Type 1 if it does rear it's ugly head. Being aware of the symptoms and getting him treatment ASAP before DKA begins is critical to avoid a stay in the ICU. If you simply MUST know if he'll be type 1, I believe there are blood tests that can be performed which look for antibodies that are present which may indicate that Type 1 is more likely. Those tests aren't 100% though. You can probably ask your husband's endocrinologist about the likelyhood of this happening to your son and also about the antibody testing. A good website for info for your family is www.childrenwithdiabetes.com (all about type 1). dad died of Type2 some yrs ago....I "might" have the gene (or whatever) as I'm his son. Don't know mon - son descent There is a possibility as diabetes is hereditary in some cases. Just keep an eye out for excessive thirst, excessive urination, weight loss and what I call a "floppy" tired look. Hopefully, your baby will be just fine. type 1 diabetes occurs when your pancreas does not produce any insulin. That means you will be on insulin the rest of your life. Since insulin has familial predisposition, you have to let your son get tested. Type 1 isn't hereditary. Type 2 (adult onset) is. People with Type 1 *may* have a predisposition to *catch* it. It can happen b/c of a virus attacking your pancreas. OK, i have type 1 diabetes and I've read that if the father has type 1, the child has a 7% chance of getting diabetes, but 5% chance if the mother has it, but then I've heard of families where the father has it and all of his kids got type 1 diabetes before the age of 10, so there is a possibility of your son getting it. |
