I need a diet for a juvenile, everything from meals to snacks.?

My sons girlfriend has a 13 year old daughter that has diabetes, has had since see was little but the mother does not take care of it like she should so the daughter ends up in the hospital and missing school and social services has been involved. My son ask me about helping the girl learn about diabetes so she can take care of herself and start eating right. Any help I would appreciate as I have look on the internet but they don't give you a diet with meals or specific things. Her doctor gave her a list of some things not to eat but said she could eat just about anything, which I didn't think diabetes can.

She has seen a nutritionist but she says that she can eat anything but she don't take care of her insulin like she should and I have seen her eat a quart of ice cream at one time. She needs regular meals because she don't exercise either. My son is trying to help her get on the right track.

The diabetes association will have books on diet and the portion sizes what is good to eat and what to stay away from.

She does need to exercise but if she is not doing it now and she starts she needs to have some quick sugar with her.
She might start to go into lows (low sugars) if she starts to do allot.

sense she likes ice cream here is a recipe that gives you the taste and texture of ice cream or a milk shake but it is good for you.

1 cup of frozen strawberries (to make this thick they have to be frozen)
put them into a blender and pour in 1/2 cup of skim milk
use the pulse setting or turbo keep it on until it is no longer mixing
add a bit of milk at a time and stir in between additions do this just until it tunnels or sucks down when on.
this make the consistency of soft server ice cream
if you want it thinner just add more milk

eating the right carbs like dried beans / lentils / legumes
whole grains
stay away from
white sugar
white flour
white rice

eating whole grains
wild rice
brown rice
whole grain breads demisters is the only store bought bread that is really whole grain
eating home made hot cereals
oatmeal (not instant)
red river
cream of wheat
wheat lets
corn meal
oat bran
bran

While fruits and veggies are good for you she should stay away from fruit juice it is very high in sugar and the serving size is 1/4 cup eating the fruit has more fiber.
eating free veggies
celrey
peppers
lettus
cucumber
radish
carrots are not free but eating 1/3 cup is ok
brocci
colliflower
she can have allot of the above without affecting her sugars

there is so much to go into if you need more info please email me

Type 1 diabetics can eat anything as long as they cover their carbohydrates with appriate doses of insulin.
She needs to see a diabetes educator and nutritionist, professionals who are qualified to give this type of instruction.

You can go to the American Diabetes Association website (diabetes.org). They have a goldmine of recipes on their and even offer some diabetic cookbooks.

It is true that a diabetic can eat just about anything. It just has everything to do with moderation and portion size (a few spoonfulls of ice cream as opposed to a whole bowl).

There aren't too many things that I don't eat. I do stay away from really high carb foods but there are ways around that too (I use wheat pasta and wheat bread). As I mentioned, moderation and portion size is the key. Also, knowing proper dosages of insulin is important too.

If social services is already involved, they can refer the girl to a diet and nutrition counselor. Also, she may need additional counseling so she fully understands what can happen to her if she does not get herself under control.

Yes, we can have treats. We don't have to eat like rabbits all the time.

Diabetics have to watch the carbohydrates in all the foods that they eat. I am an adult that has had this since 1999. I pretty much eat what I want. There is a website that gives some useful information and it is www.AmMedDirect.com
This website offers a Better Care Kit, sign up and get the kit.
Basically the diet that I follow is to eat anywhere from 30-45 gms of carbs per meal and if you are allowed snacks, they should be around 15 gms of carbs.
You should not let a diabetic patient go for more than 5 hours without eating something.
Did the nutritionist that your son's girfriend see, give her a list of the portion size of foods that she can or cannot eat?
Go back to the doctor with this girl and expalin your concern.
Also you can check out www.diabeticdietsecrets.com and this site may give you useful and helpful information that can assist you in trying to help this young girl.
