Any type 1 diabetics ever get annoyed with misinformation from type 2?

My sister who is also a juvenile diabetic got this response once. She sad I hate being diabetic (and she weighs alot), and her friend said can't you just lose weight to get rid of it? I know most people mean well when they talk about having to take pills for their "diabetes" but lots of times I wish there were two different names, one for type 1 and another for type 2. (Type 1 is insulin dependent and is caused by antibodies killing insulin cells.) Anyone else feel this?

Like parents, LOL

I guess what I hate most is when my T2 friends tell me that I shouldn't be eating that cake or candy. I cannot get them to understand that I can if I count the carbs and give enough insulin to cover it.
It is usually the T2s and general public who give the wrong advice only because that is the majority of diabetes patients and what is out most on the media. So most people who hear that you have diabetes are only hearing the information about Type 2 diabetes. So they tend to think that diabetes is diabetes and the only thing that separates the two is that one needs insulin and the other does not. Most don't even know that T2 will eventually need insulin at some point in their lives. All they know is that all Diabetics are not allowed ANY carbs or sugars only because of misinformation. So I tend to forgive them of this and try to take this as an opperunity to educate them further than what they are hearing from Grandpa or the media.
I hope this is making some sense as I think I am going a little low at the moment.....LOL.

Thank you for the vote. I too, was misdiagnosed as T2 for a year, so I know alot about T2 treatment and T1! Report It

I think that a lot of diabetics, type 1 and 2, get annoyed from misinformation from self proclaimed "diabetic experts" that really don't know jack.

It's people that don't know much...if anything...about the disease that push my buttons. I've had people ask me what I did to get diabetes. News flash...I didn't do anything. It just happened. I'm not overweight (never have been), there is no history of it in my family, I get plenty of exercise, I eat right...my pancreas just failed.

Another thing that makes me angry is when type2 diabetics are told "just lose some weight...it will go away". That is simply not true. Diabetes can be managed more effectively by losing weight but it won't cure it.

I used to get upset when I had to take a shot in public and someone saw me and made some remark about it. Well, after a while, I stopped defending myself for having a disease. I never wanted this. I will keep hoping for a cure.

As for the people who don't know what they are talking about, just tell them that. Diabetes is a difficult disease to manage and live with. I don't need someone with little or no knowledge telling me how I need to live my life or telling me if I do such-and-such, it will go away. I KNOW that's not true. It's hard to ignore people like that without getting upset but I try. I just hate seeing other people led on and deceived by such people. It gives false hope, which is cruel and plays on people's emotions...even their lives.

I've said enough.

Type 1, pump user

In response to the poster who mentioned that there are type 2s who must take insulin...that is true. In some cases, diet, oral meds and exercise just aren't enough. The VAST majority of diabetics are type 2. Roughly 10-15% are type 1.

While I don't have Diabetes it's annoying when someone claims that sugar causes Diabetes or I see a lot of scam cures here on Yahoo Answers.

Well, I understand the frustration because type 1 isn't the only ones who have insulin dependency. I am a type 2 and I am insulin dependent. Oral meds could not control the wide swings so if I didn't take insulin I would be in big trouble. So there is misinformation on both sides.

I agree that they should be separated more as a disease. They are 2 different diseases with different treatments from the start. I've had Type 1 for 37.50 years and am amazed at how many people tell me what I can or cannot eat. I tell them kindly that times have changed and that with an insulin pump, I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want. Times have changed drastically over the last 20 years and we have much more freedom to live a closer to normal life.

I was diagnoised 3 years ago at age 29 w/ type 1. And I can tell you the hardest part was geeting used to all the other people out there that think I did this to myself or that all I need is a good diet and a few pills. Or going to a party or out to dinner with friends and they all thing they know what I should eat more then I do. I hate it.
