Is it safe to give melatonin to my 4 years old child? |
After a long flight and 6 hours time difference, my 4 year old child is suffering from jet lag. Does anyone know if it is safe to give melatonin to children? Don't do it! Your child has developing strategies to deal with such situations, don't go giving chemical stimuli which could result in problems with his/her own natural manufacturing of this hormone, maybe soon, or much later in life. Chemical quick-fixes should be avoided whenever humanly possible. call the pediatrician. That is something you should ask your pharmacist or doctor about. I know benadryl works, my friend's pediatrician suggested when her 3 year old was having trouble going to sleep at night. I would NOT give any supplements to my child, especially something that is not regulated by the FDA. It's one thing to take chances with an adults life, but no one has studied the effects of this drug on children. Please do NOT! The jury is still out on whether or not it is truly safe for children. Some doctors will ok the use of it on a short term basis and others say No to giving anything like this even though it is natural to children. I just say use your best judgement. Usually it just takes a few days to get caught up on the sleep. Allow your child to take naps to make up for the time loss. why don't you just let him sleep it off. He will adjust in no time. Just be patient. |
