Signs of Jaundice?

I was diagnosed with mono a week ago and was told i could get jaundice. Are the signs like yellowing skin and eyes extremely noticeable or is it something i could miss?

You may get some jaundice during an infection with mono. But that's a uncommon complication.

The quickest way to detect jaundice is to examine the sclera (whites) of the eyes. Jaundice will show there before anywhere else and its not influenced by skin color.

Jaundice is a buildup of bilirubin in the body. Bilirubin is a natural breakdown product of hemoglobin (the protein in your red blood cells that actually carries the oxygen molecules). Red cells breakdown continously and are replaced continously. (Red cells only live for about 120 days or so).

When the liver is irritated by a disease (mono for instance), it may not process the bilirubin for elimination in the stool. The bilirubin (called indirect bilirubin) accumulates. The fat of the skin and other connective tissues is where it deposits.
Your body will eliminate the bilirubin once the liver starts working again.

You can also sit in the direct sunlight. It too will breakdown bilirubin. (They do the same thing with newborn babies that are slightly jaundiced when their liver is not up to speed).

The yellowing skin starts gradually. You will notice but pay close attention so you DO notice it right away.

yes yelow skin is so noticeable you could be as yellow as a banana.... my boss died from it so i know it is true
.and stay away from others as it is very contagious

No I don't think you could miss it.
I had mono back in high school, it really takes a lot out of you. And believe the doctor when they say No drinking alcohol, I paid for that one for a year or so. Get lots of rest, and don't socialize much, because it is as contagious as a cold, you don't have to be intimately close to some one who has it to get it.

it may not be apparent in the skin in the early stage. You can see yellow spots in your eyes, especially the white part above your pupils first before you notice it elsewhere.
