Yellow jaundice, enlarged liver and 2 stone weight loss! Gallstones or Cancer?

Hi my mom has just been to the drs. for blood tests and they have rushed them thru, she has had the result back and the dr. confirmed that she has yellow jaudice.. her eyes are all yellow and she has lost 2 stone in weight in the last 2 months..
The dr. examined her and confirmed she has an enlarged liver . My mother has been vomiting when eating and is very weak. she is 55 years of age and the drs. have said she may have liver cancer. They are sending her for test tomorrow.. for a liver biopsy..
Has anyone had any experince with this.. or could she just have gallstones?
This has all been rushed through in matter of 2 days.

Well Jaundice could be from many things, hepatitis included, and maybe cancer too.

The liver being enlarged, her vomiting and weakness say she's a really sick puppy.

The biopsy will confirm if it's cancer, and what type if so, or what else it might be.

I agree that you can't speculate. Wait and see what the results are. The worst is the not knowing, believe me I've been there too with my son's illness. When that diagnosis comes is when you know and start to deal with it.

Best of luck.

She could have either or even a pancreatic problem. I hope it isn't cancer, but there is always that change. May God look out for you and your Mom.

Don't ask on here friend....you will either have your hopes falsely raised or be scared to death unnecessarily. You will find out the correct diagnosis soon enough. Tormenting yourself with possibilities is a waste of energy...which you may need at a later date. Best of luck.

I am not a Doctor, but in my experience I would say that this doesn't sound like gallstones. But that doesn't automatically mean cancer either. It could be Hepatitus, but in any event it sounds like she may be in for a rough ride. I wish her well.

i think my dad had this. it wasnt cancer it was jaundice and hepatits. probably not cancer.

regretably, this sounds very serious, and may well be a tumour. It is unusual for gallbladder disease to cause the liver to enlarge and that much weight loss in that short of a period. Her doctors are correct in rushing the work-up.
Will be thinking of you and your mum over the next days and weeks.

An impaired liver is probably the cause of her jaundice, since you mentioned it is enlarged. The liver performs a specific function in the processing of bilirubin, and loss of that function leads to buildup of bilirubin, or jaundice. So different conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and liver cancer can result in jaundice.

A lot of things could cause rapid weight loss, but I think it may be because she hasn't been eating well due to vomiting. The biopsy will give more answers. I wish you the best of luck.

Not nessesary that she have Cancer, but enlarged liver is against gallstones
1.I would first do some serology tests to rule out Hepatitis C or B or else nonhepatic viruses
2.then if she has fever, diarhea or constipation,I would rule out salmonella, brucella infections...
3,liver biopsy is is essential to assess liver condition weather she has liver cirhossis, tumours could be benign or malignant.
4,Ultrasound should be done to rule out pancreatic disease or gallbladder cancer

gallstones and again it could be hep c.

it could be a stone in the common bile duct, which causes similar symptoms as you mentioned. or hepatitis, not necessarily cancer. the clinician is trying to rule out cancer before moving on so that nothing is missed.

I wish your mom well. I'm glad the doctors are being proactive in diagnosing what is causing her illness. We just burried my 45 year old brother in law last week. He died from liver failure. It's sad that we didn't see the symptoms earlier and could have encouraged him to seek medical treatment earlier. His was caused by alcohol abuse
