Why jaundice delays wound healing?

heard this in my clinics n gotta know y? i thought its cos of liver damage that leads to a decreased production of collagen so delayed wound healing. i dunno if i'm right. correct me on this

jaundice directly has no effect on wound healing ,

Almost. The liver also produces RBC's, which help clotting and getting O2 to the wound.

One study showed that it is not true. I mean jaundice doesn't affect wound healing. If at all it delays wound healing, it could be due to reduced antibodies, increasing chances of infection.

When the liver has inflammation...if the inflammation isn't taken care of, it can lead to death of the liver cells which leave scar tissue inside the liver. This scar tissue blocks the other cells from receiving nourishment and oxygen and they die also.
What happens is, that as this is going on, the liver is no longer able to function well to do the things it once did to help the body heal. There are factors, that the liver makes, that help in the healing and blood clotting process. Blood tests the doctor has done for this are the Pt, Ptt, and INR.

If the blood does not clot well, the patient can bleed very easily. Also the patient who has cirrhosis, their skin is thinner and they bruise quick easily.

The reason jaundice occurs is because the
when the red blood cells die, the spleen takes and converts it into a substance known as bilirubin. This bilirubin travels to the liver on a protein that the liver makes,
known as Albumin. The liver then converts
this Bilirubin into a soluble form which will combine with the bile and flow from the liver, through tube like structures, to the gallbladder or the intestines to help in the digestion of fats we eat. However, since this isn't happening, since the liver is damage and cannot handle this bilirubin...it doesn't get changed to a soluble form and it goes out into the blood instead. Bilirubin is a yellowish, brown to greenish substance.
When it is in larger amount in the blood, it causes the skin to turn yellow and also the white of the eyes. There is a normal amount of bilirubin in the blood at all times...but this excess amount is more like a toxin now. The kidneys start to work harder, because they filter the blood, to remove this toxin and can easily fail when it becomes too much. When the kidneys start to have problems, not just from this toxin, but all the toxins that are formed because the liver is failing, then the heart can start to have problems also. The whole body is distressed and it can cause multi organ failures. Jaundice is a symptom and not a condition. I never heard of it having a direct effect on wound healing, but it could be since it is no longer normal in nature when it goes into a toxic range. If you combine that with the fact that the factors to help the blood to clot isn't normal...it very well could be. I will have to research this more myself...as I've never heard of this.
I'll post more if I find something about this.

I found this article on Medscape:
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/5356...
It says on there about wound breaking strength and also in some cases preventing
angiogenesis. " You were right!!!" it states here about one gentlemen that says it is from diminished collagen accumulation.
Go to the bottom of the page here and then reverse back up the page to where it says Liver and Jaundice.

Medscape requires you to sign up at times,
it is a simple process to do this and it is free and you will have access to all their articles which are quite interesting. I use it often.

I've learned something here and I have found your post very interesting.

the liver does not produce red blood cells. these are produced in the bone marrow.jaundice is a symptom of liver disease when your liver is not functioning correctly it interferes with digestion. if you are not getting all the nutrients needed by your body it will cause other symptoms
