It might be hives. Hives is a relatively common form of allergic reaction that causes raised red skin welts. These welts can range in diameter from 5 mm (0.2 inches) or more, itch severely, and often have a pale border. Common causes of hives can include:
foods, especially peanuts, eggs, tree nuts, milk, shellfish, wheat, and soy
medications, especially antibiotics like penicillin and sulfa drugs
additives in foods or medications, such as the food dye tartrazine (Yellow No. 5)
infections, especially viral infections
insect bites and stings
latex
exercise
stress
exposure to heat, cold, or water, no matter what the temperature is
dermographism, a physical urticaria, in which hives are triggered by stroking the skin, such as by scratching
*Take an oral antihistamine (such as Benedryl) to reduce the itching and a topical anti-itch cream (such as Lanocane) for persistent itchy areas.
Another possibility is diabetes. It can cause a lot of itching.

I used to scratch my scalp terribly. I went to 3 MDs. the first 2 couldn't find anything wrong. The 3rd was a dermatologist who also didn't see anything wrong. However, he explained that I set off the dreadful itch/scratch cycle. I had scratched so much, that I got my nerve endings super sensitive. Any slight breeze and I'd want to scratch!

The best remedy for me ('cause I'm lazy) was fake nails which greatly diminished the pleasurable sensation I got from scratching.

My first advice is to see at least one very good dermatologists, if not 3 or more! Make sure there are no physical problems.

There may be biochemical problems, so you'd need a professional to address possible solutions for that.

Or, maybe it's just a habit that you will need behavior modification to remedy.

Best of everything to you!

Ask ahead of time if the doctor will be sensitive to your issue. You do NOT need to feel shame.

I'm not sure why you don't want to see the doctor if it is causing you so much distress. Seeing a doctor can help you obtain a proper diagnosis. Then, it is up to you to decide what treatment options you wish to take.

If you have just started itching, with no previous history, it may be a case of hives due to an allergic reaction. It may be a food allergy, allergy to dust mites, pollen or anything. However, you need to confirm this with the doctor before you embark on any treatment plan.

I have very itchy skin due to medication I take and have found that Sarna lotion helps a lot to help relieve me of the itchiness. I know you can go crazy with the itching but I really recommend this lotion it helps a lot - if your skin is dry add moisturizer like aquaphor to it because sarna has no moisturizer in it.

You may have a food allergy. Write down everything you have eaten when you first developed the itching. Take it to the doctors and get a simple blood test for those specific foods. Better to be safe than sorry.
