Go back to your GP for further checks, and ask him/her to explain IBS to you. It isn't a serious condition, and can be treated effectively, but it is very uncomfortable. Stress is a main contributor to IBS, so do find out more about your condition so that you can stop worrying about it.

Irritable bowel syndrome - IBS - may be linked to stress, so aim to manage your stress as well as you're able.

See your dr. about potential depression, if you haven't already done so. There are some good treatments, not all of them via medication. This could include some counselling or therapy.

As your boyfriend is away, then I guess this could be a possible cause for either. But, you do mention stress - and this is manageable. Exercise will also do you good, both for depression and stress.

Otherwise, speak to your GP about your weight loss and IBS and depression. She/he can probably give you some dietary advice too. IBS is still a bit of an unknown, but knowledge is getting better.

Take care of yourself and good luck! Rob

Dear gemmaAs soon as I saw your question, I felt compelled to answer. My best friend has thyroid problems...its under active, so she has to take meds for it, for the rest of her life. She had all the tests, etc. but one of the things her Doctor told her was that thyroid problems can cause symptoms of irritable bowel.I'd like to suggest that you get your thyroid functions checked as well....it can cause weight gain or loss too.Best wishes to you and your health and my prayers are with your boyfriend as well

hi i was diagnosed with i.b.s last yr after having loads of tests done.i do feel for you hun. my doc suggested that i keep a record of what i eat and drink and low and behold i found out wot starts my i.b.s off ....................... mine is milk i had a lactose hydrogen test done and im lactose intolerant. im ok eating dairy products but if i drink milk then im bad. i suggest you try this just keep a diary of wot you eat each day and c if there is something there that is triggering it off. i work in a supermarket and i found we sell a milk that is lactose free ive tried it and by god it dosent upset my tummy lol. if you are losing weight to quickly then i suggest you go back to see your doc
