Bradycardia and Irregular Heartbeat?

I am an18 yo otherwise healthy female, I noticed several years ago that my heartbeat was about 50 bpm and i had an irregular pulse to where it will beat regular and stop for 5-10 seconds. I never thought much of it until i began nursing school. Today in class the teacher, whom is a nurse practitioner Strongly recommended that I see a doctor right away, which I will do however, in the mean time I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to why this would happened. The only associated factors that i can think of might be I get dizzy easily and I get migranes about 1-2x a month. Thank you for any advice.

Bradycardia isn't a issue as much as the rhythm your heart is in. There are 4 that are associated with slow heart rates:
Sinus bradycardia, which is when the rhythm is normal, but the rate is slow.
1st Degree AV Block, which is when the signal consistantly takes longer to reach the ventricles
2nd Dgree Type 1, which is usually an 'off and on' type of rhythm, where the time that it takes for the signal to reach the ventricles will take a little longer every beat until finally it drops one beat. This is completely begnin.
2nd Degree Type 2,
And
3rd Degree, which is what is known as a 'complete heart block'. This is when the signal never reaches the ventricles and the Atria and Ventricles fire on their own, but in a consistant pattern. They do not 'communicate'.

Most bradycardias are begnin, especially if you have no symptoms, however some, 3rd degree specifically, can develope into a more serious condition. Usually the treatment is a pacemaker.
No offense to nurses, but I have never met one who understands cardiology well enough to honestly know how serious most rhythms are or not.

Bradycardia in itself may not be a problem. Many athletes have low heart rates as a result of their conditioning so if you are an athlete this is normal. If you are not having any symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, syncope then you don't qualify for treatment.
As for the irregular heartbeat its hard to understand from the description. Some arryhthmias are normal in young adults but I agree that you should see a doctor just to be sure. They may do an EKG.
Good luck in school and with your health!
