Why does my doctor think that my constant irregular heartbeat and slight mitral valve leak need no treatment? |
Four weeks ago I had a tachycardia brought on by being awake for about 48hrs and drinking soda/energy drinks all day and taking a couple vivarin. My heart was beating quickly and I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the ER and they diagnosed me with a tachycardia and told me to get some rest and that I would be fine. Well, I got my rest and I did not get better. It has been 4 weeks now and I have completely cut caffeine and alcohol and most sugar and everything else I can think of out of my diet. I have had several tests done and the only thing my doctor came up with is a leaky mitral valve which he considers to be slight. He is not concerned about my irregular heartbeat and isn't concerned that my heart now races by performing everyday activities. I am only 26 years old and have cholesterol of 120! My good cholesterol is 48! My normal resting heart rate was 58, now it is in the high 70's! I have an appointment with a cardiologist next week. Any opinions or advice? Tachycardia is when your heart beats too fast which in most cases is easily treated with medication. An irregular heart beat on the other hand, needs immediate attention. What can happen when your heart beats irregularly is that a clot can form and sit at the base of your heart. When your heart goes into regular rhythm, the clot can be dislodged and go to your brain (stoke) or to your lungs (pulmonary embolism). At the minimum you should start taking a baby aspirin every day with food until you get in and see a cardiologist. A cardiologist is specialized in this area and is the best person to talk to. Good luck. go see another doctor and get enough sleep, water and vitamins 4 starters. I experienced a similar incident about 5 years ago and have had the same response from the docs. "unknown cardiac event" non-lifethreatening. the only advice I can give is you will feel better when you can learn to relax and do kind of a zen thing when you start to feel the PVC's occur it will help to control them and you won't feel so uncomfortable. however in the mean time absolutely verify your condition with a qualified doctor that you trust. your heart rate is still at the normal levels. as a matter of fact pace makers are set at 70. as for the irregular heart beat, they are more common than ppl think. most ppl have some irregularity in thier heart beat but nothing that requires the risk of side effects of medications. tachycardia just means that your heart was beating fast, probably due to the caffiene you ingested. GET A SECOND OPINION, A.S.A.P. You are seeing a cardiologist next week for a cardiac workup and if there is a treatable problem, your cardiologist will treat you. A heart rate in the 70s is very normal, matter of fact 60-100 BPM is considered normal. Many people have a "slightly" leaky heart valve and live normal lives without meds or surgery. |
