Iron????????

My husband and I eat no pork at all, and have very much decreased our beef intake. Pretty much we only eat chicken and fish. I mentioned this to my mother, and she said that we should watch our iron level. So my question is what foods are high in iron? From what I hear taking an iron supplement pill, and be kind of hard to digest, or something. Any ideas would be welcome. :)

Green veggies like cabbage are packed with iron.

The main source of iron in the human being is red meat.
The iron is contained in the red pigment of the muscle called "myoglobin"..it is the easiest form of iron (for intestinal ansorption)
Other less rich meals rich in Iron are lentils, black beans, asparragus,.
Iron if not needed can be toxic...
A good idea before you take any supplement, is to measure in the blood the iron levels, apoferritin, asnd Iron binding capacity...
A good piece of information,,,
Children drops of iron are as sueful as tablets, and non irritant on the stomach of adults...and still contain enoug iron to correct ant real deficiency..(by real I mean proven in the Lab)...and Other piece of good information. Ingested Iron in small amounts, has a "top switch" it means yor intestine will not absorb more than the amount needed, if there is already enough iron in your body...(the apoferritin that carries the iron from intestin to blood appears if iron is low, and dissapears if normal or high) thus, acting as a regulator of iron absorption.
It is necessary to take at least 50 mg of ascorbic acid or "vitamin C" in order to make the iron more available to your body.
It is harmless and can be very useful...
Good blood, I mean...Good luck

iron from animal sources are easier to be absorbed by the body than iron from vegetal sources(plants).

animal sources : red meats (beef, bison, wild game, horse)
offals (liver, kidneys, brain, blood sausage)

vegetal sources: all green vegetables (spinash, broccoli in particular)

other: iron supplies
