Iron tablets and giving blood?

I tried to give blood on Nov. 29 and i could not b/c the iron in my blood was too low...they told me i could come back in 2 weeks to try again...i ate more food with iron in it like they suggested and i went back two weeks and two days later to try again and it was still too low....they told me i could come back in a week and try again....should i try and take iron tablets before going back? how long does it take for the iron tablets to start working? thanks!

I have had the same problem and have come to find out that I am anemic, which means I have trouble absorbing the iron I put into my body. I take Iron tablets (ferrous). Your pharmacist can help you choose some. Also whenever you eat iron in food always eat it with a source of vitamin C as this helps you to absorb the iron.

The people at the blood center are taking a hemoglobin count. It was probably below 12 or 13 if they wouldn't let you donate.

You will also feel much better as far as fatigue goes when you you start taking them. Your color will improve also. Good Luck!

i think it takes about a month for iron to get really into your blood. you should def try taking iron tablets.

yes they definiatly work...im am anemic(when my iron is very low) and when i do take the pills they go up within a few days...so they work very well. Vitamin C also soaks the iron so itll be even faster!

My iron is always one point too low -- I take a multivitamin with iron in it to keep this from happening.

You'll want to speak to your doctor about this first, as iron can be dangerous and lead to death if not taken properly.

Taking iron tablets should help, but one other thing you could also try is going to a different donation center. For instance, where I live you can choose from the ARUP or the Red Cross, for some reason the ARUP has always told me that I don't have enough iron, but I've never had any problems with giving at the Red Cross. Just a suggestion. :)
