Concern about iron supplements.?

I have been taking iron pills (Ferrous Sulfate, 65mg Iron) recently since I am a bit anemic. However, I've had chest pains and severe vomiting since last night (my vomit has blood in it) and i think I ended up taking over fifteen of the iron pills later throughout the day yesterday since I was having bad nosebleeds, was very weak, and was so worried about my iron being too low. How bad is taking too much iron? I am feeling a little better right now but haven't been able to eat much of anything all day. i'm worried about how i will be doing in a little while. Just wondering if anyone knows more about iron supplements and what i should do. Please let me know if you can help! Thanks!

The site above has some good information for you about taking too much iron. You can cause liver and heart damage by taking too much. Liver damage will prolong your bleeding times (like you having severe nosebleeds) You should consult your doctor immediately.

If you are taking 65 mg iron, it is too much. You definitely need to read the following website. You can do alot of damage to yourself with what you are doing!

opps, you type faster then I do......but it's good information.

You need to see a doctor RIGHT AWAY. Iron poisoining is VERY DANGEROUS. You've taken way too much!!!!

According to what I've researched & learned, I was told (by a nutritionist & herbologist) that the correct type of iron to take is: Ferrous Succinate.

I buy mine from Olympian Labs Inc (off internet). Name on bottle: Extreme Iron Assimilator. It has no side effects like the others (gas, constipation) & is readily absorped into your body.

But seriously, you need to get to a dr very soon. You are in DANGER!

Women need about 18mg a day. Iron toxicity is a serious problem. Any time excessive iron intake is suspected, immediately call your physician or Poison Control Center, or visit your local emergency room.
DO NOT take iron supplements without first getting blood tests to determine needs!!

It does sound like you're getting more than you probably need, but if you are anemic then you have an iron deficiency which means that you're either not getting enough, you're loosing too much (which always happens when you loose blood) or you are not metabolizing properly.

If you have a genetic condition known as hemochromatosis, you could be holding iron back in your system and that may also register as funny blood markers. Of course, no one on this board can legally diagnose you with this or any other condition, so you should get checked out by a licensed medical professional.

I have worked with MD referrals who have found that they were not actually iron deficient but had chronic deficiencies of other key nutrients which affect the production of healthy red blood cells. As that improved, their utilization of their iron improved as did their other symptoms.

If you were vomiting blood you MUST immediately go to your nearest hospital.

This is a serious problem - you have probably overdosed on the iron pills and you need medical help NOW.

Don't take any more of the iron supplement - get to the hospital.

Too much iron is similar to too much cholesterol.

An overload of iron will form hard iron deposits on your artery walls in the same way that hard cholesterol deposits form on your artery walls.

A Yahoo search for "iron poisoning" may be of interest to you.

You should only take your supplements as directed on the packet. You should not take any more than is directed. You might like to try a herbal vitamin iron supplement because they can be easier to absorb!
