IV Iron what is this!!?

i am anemic and i have been taking Iron for the past 6 months and my iron levels have not improved at all!! My soctor is starting to get really worried because my iron levels are very very low they are less then 1 and they should be aroud 10-251
She told me that if i did not improve any in 4 weeks when she repeats my labs that i was going to have to start doing IV iron!! Will i be able to do this in her office or will i have to go to the hospital to do this!!! And how long will i have to do this? Will i have to go everyday or once a week?

Sorry i just am worried and would like some advice!!

Thanks

Some docs do IVs in their office, but hospitals or labs can do it as an outpatient procedure. Most IVs don't hurt except for a sting while getting the needle situated; it's not anything to stress out over. If your iron gets low enough, your blood cannot carry oxygen to your cells, so it's really important that you be treated. It's amazing that you are walking around with iron levels that low.

Your doc needs to determine WHY your iron levels are so low. Heavy periods are a common reason in young women. If you don't have heavy periods, you could be bleeding internally, for example from an ulcer, or you could have pernicious anemia, which requires lifelong B-12 injections. You need further testing, and soon. Probably a blood test to check for B-12 defiency to start, and an endoscopy from both ends to determine if you are bleeding in your digestive tract. Whatever the cause, you need treatment. I cannot believe your doctor is waiting 4 weeks to see if you improve. Personally, I would find another doctor.
