Alternative to iron tablets??

i had a blood test and the doctor said i should be taking iron tablets however when i take them i get headaches, and an upset stomach. maybe its to much iron in one go?
are there particular foods you can eat wich are rich in iron?
also i feel like i get fat when i take iron tablets is that possible??

Dark leafy greens like spinach, prunes and red meats are rich in iron. I also cannot tolerate iron pills.
Try taking a multivitamin that has just the daily recommended dose of iron in it, as opposed to the mega-dose of iron an iron supplement has in it.
Also, take with a full glass of water after a meal, that should help ease the troubles with your stomach.

I agree with above answer....some people have better tolerance of iron in children's chewable vitamins...just compare the iron content written on the box

Sometimes taking a reduced dosage of iron for a longer period of time can help.
